I can only think of 1 reason to hold a press conference and hopefully it is to bow out and cut off the bleeding for the GOP in MO...

We get it, Todd... you’re staying in...you have your “principles”... God wants you there.

So, take the attention off yourself and kindly set about your task.

I’ve read he and his staff have recieved numerous threats. It could be about that.

There’s more info here...

I guess by 4PM they mean Central Time.

Agreed. But given the level of a$$hattery out of this foolish fellow already, just about anything is possible.

Because he's been getting lots of attention lately and he's diggin' it. Maybe he'll do this weekly.

The news release did not state what the news conference was about. The Associated Press and CNN report that Akin will stay in the race.

Grrr...

I’m in his congressional district and one of his senior campaign staff spoke at the local Pacyderms Club about 12:00. Based on that, I seriously doubt he’s pulling out. His support at the meeting was near 100% and his fundraising is beating his own goals.

Well I do hope he stays in, but would understand if he bows out

Sad that the Democrats and Pro-Abort Liberals in the GOP are pushing him out. He would have made a solid conservative in the Senate...so lacking in the GOP

Akin is being attacked because of his strong conservative beliefs, not the so-called comment.

Hmmmm ... He's generated 150K in small donations in 48 hours. Nearly 7K signatures on his petition. 18K likes on Facebook. Words of support from Congressmen and grass roots leaders. I would be surprised if he withdrew. It would be a huge disappointment. We need firm resolve and conservative values in the Senate, and Akin possesses them both. But I have to admit, historically a highly public surprise Friday announcement does not bode well for conservatives. The Republicans may have negotiated to have their way after all.

I would say this Presser is to politely display the middle digit of his hand to the Liberal Pro-Aborts who are trying to push him out.

BS, and you know that.

Akin is dumb as a rock, if he wanted to persuade people he could have said the child conceived by rape is an innocent victim and needs not to die, but no, Akin had to go into the magic uterus theory.

He can drop out until Sept. 25th., although it requires a court’s approval.

If he had dropped out by August 21 he wouldn’t need the courts approval. It was easier that way obviously and that’s what he should have done, IMO.

A local talk radio host said this morning that he had talked to some MO GOP insiders, and they said Akin was dropping out. I wasn’t sure then, but this news conference makes me more confident his information was correct. This was after the latest MO poll broke this morning.

The whole thing is silly but it is what is. Akin was clumsy in his statements and derailed the whole abortion debate. He caused more harm than good. If he wants to talk about abortion go after the problem. Rape induced abortion ain’t it. “Birth control” abortions is most of it - probably 99 percent. Go after that or late term abortions where obama is most vulnerable. We need warriors who can be effective and not implode. Akin is a good man but too clumsy for that job. He also poorly handled the aftermath and seems more interested in his pride than the greater good. If abortion is his “crusade” he can forget it now. No one will listen to him.

Having said that they better have a plan on who to replace him with.
