New York (CNN) -- All nine people injured in Friday's shooting in front of the Empire State Building were wounded by police gunfire, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Saturday.
The officers unloaded a total of 16 rounds at a disgruntled former apparel designer, killing him after he shot and killed a co-worker and engaged in a gunbattle with police, authorities have said.
Police said an investigation is under way after one officer shot nine rounds while another shot seven. Three victims suffered gunshot wounds, while the remaining six were hit by fragments.
The gunman, who served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the late 1970s, had two rounds left in his .45-caliber pistol. It holds eight rounds, Kelly said.
The violence erupted Friday morning just as visitors began to queue up to ascend the famous New York skyscraper in one of Manhattan's busiest neighborhoods.

I know for a fact if someone was in the process of bringing a gun up to shoot me I would slowly draw my weapon, carefully aim at center mass, check my backstop, and SQUEEZE the trigger. These cops have no discipline.

About a year ago there was a story out of Detroit about a guy who killed a home invader and accidentally shot his wife in the process. She forgave him.

If some of them were CCW/CHL, it would have been over before the cops arrived. And probably with a lot less carnage.
Maybe so, but the media may be adding that item because the perp was a loony-tune who apparently told his co-workers all kinds of conflicting stories about serving in the Army, the Marines, doing tours in Vietnam, etc. The statement about the Coast Guard may be there to provide a definitive answer to some questions that had been swirling around the story yesterday.
seen some of the NY cops on the video when the shooting happened, and boy there was one black woman cop who must have weighed 250 pound another looked like they were raised on donuts.
Having been to that city numnerous times I can honestly say the NY Cops are not the most professional lot I’ve ever come across, most seem miserable, can’t be bothred to do their job etc.
Not sure how they do their recruiting but maybe that needs to be addressed.
Likely .40 cal Glocks...spray and pray...empty the magazine in the direction of the perp.....
Not calling for disarming them, but perhaps equipping them with revolvers might improve their accuracy..
I had a girlfriend who was accidentally shot by her father.
Nothing serious just some small shot ricochet caught her in the leg. She wasn’t where she was supposed to be.
