I am not a big fan of teachers unions. In most cities, they are the primary obstacle to controlling budgets and improving education. But sometimes they are even worse than that.
Local 59 is the City of Minneapoliss unit of the Minnesota Federation of Teachers. Minneapolis public school teachers have their work cut out for them: many of the citys schools are poor. How much the union is to blame for this I dont know, but it certainly bears some responsibility for the abysmal performance of the citys public education system. So one might think that Minneapolis public school teachers would focus their efforts on doing their jobs, and trying to educate their often-challenging student population.
But no: like so many other public employee unions, Local 59 cant resist meddling in politics. This email recently went out to all Minneapolis public school teachers:
From: email@example.com [firstname.lastname@example.org] on behalf of Lynn Nordgren [email@example.com] Sent: Sunday, August 05, 2012 3:11 PM To: All-Teachers@list.mpls.k12.mn.us Subject: Taking on the KOCH brothers by boycotting their products!
BOYCOTT the ANTI-Union, ANTI-Teacher, ANTI-public education KOCH Brothers!
As many of you know, the very rich KOCH brothers (poster children for the 1 %) are a major funder of the effort to take down unions and public education. They fund TEA party candidates and the far, far right agenda. They truly are trying to take over the government.
An email and Facebook campaign to boycott products made by Koch Industries is growing. There is also a new film out entitled: EXPOSED: The Billionaire Koch Brothers Who Are Buying American Democracy. MFT is trying to get a copy of the film as we speak.
What can you do if you wish to stop the Koch brothers campaign? You can boycott the following paper products:

IIRC, here in WI, the union pensions are invested in various Koch enterprises.
Wonder if they are going to issue a similar warning about the ultra rich evil capitalist George Soros who’s trying to take over the government from the left........guess not
Vouchers may not be the only solution, but it is a great start. Empty schools are better than bad schools.
This is actionable. She should be fired and the union warned against any further use of public money to support their thieving enterprise.
Thanks for the list. I will try to buy more “Koch Brothers” products!
Hinderaker should do stand up with lines like that.
Oops! Fail on the link above!
“But my guess is that already, few if any of Kochs well-paid employees are consigning their children to the problematic, left-leaning Minneapolis public school system.”
And how many Minneapolis public school teachers actually send their own kids to those schools?
Here in the Metro DC area, public school teachers in the hellhole district make damned sure their own kids go to the ‘better’ school districts in the area, and they know for sure which ones those are.
Most likely this was sent out on union computers from union offices on union time. The union folks are at least smart enough to know their vulnerabilities with public assets.
Nordgren is head of the MN Federation of Teachers (the “Natl Federation of Teachers” and its state/local branches tend to have the city schools while NEA groups have the suburbs). She is probably full time/salaried by the union while holding that office.
Hopefully MN parents will send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and say that they will boycott MN public schools.
So the old saying, those who can't do, teach, those who can't teach work for the NEA.

Send them the link to this story. This woman should not be allowed to send this message to taxpayer owned school computers.
When the kids start paying union dues, they’ll start thinking about the kids!
The MSNBC Klux Klan strikes again...
These poeple have to be the DUMBEST bunch of media-manipulated useful idiots in human history.
One NEA leader actually stated that very line a while back.
You forgot to post the part of the letter reaffirming the dedication of these teachers to produce the most educated students possible.
...on second thought, it probably didn’t exist.
