GOP Delays Start of Convention By NEIL KING JR.
With a potential hurricane bearing down on the Gulf of Mexico, the Republican Party took the step of canceling the first day of its national convention in Tampa, announcing late Saturday that the gathering would begin Tuesday instead of Monday. [image] Associated Press
In a statement, Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus said the convention would still go on to nominate Mitt Romney as the GOP's presidential nominee, as planned but that the first day of events had to be canceled to ensure the safety of the 50,000 or so delegates, party officials and media that are descending on the city this weekend. The convention will open Monday but adjourn immediately.
As originally planned, Mr. Romney was to be formally nominated Monday and give a nationally televised acceptance speech Thursday.
The National Hurricane Center is predicting Tropical Storm Isaac will enter the Gulf late Sunday and could rev up to a Category 1 hurricane, with winds topping 75 miles per hour, by Monday.
The center has given a chance of 30% or more of storm surges in low-lying areas of Tampa, which houses many hotels, as well as the convention center, where the GOP convention is set to take place.
In effect, the GOP convention will now be the same length, three days, as the Democratic convention set for Charlotte the first week of September. GOP officials and Romney aides told reporters that the one-day delay won't impede the party in getting out its message to voters.

and ass backwards logic
They should interrupt the naming of the hurricanes, and call it “Hurricane Todd” or “Hurricane Akin.” I would be unsurprised if the storm doesn’t even reach Tampa.
Probably prudent. I think it’s going to miss Tampa altogether, but transportation into Florida will be very difficult for the next few days.
Fleets of emergency electrical and communications repair vehicles from other states have already been seen on our roads here in North Florida heading down south to stage themselves for possible outages. They will then begin to move back up to be close to (but outside of) whatever area is next.
I'll remember that the next ime you get a couple of inches of snow in Jersey and everything shuts down! ;)
I wonder if there are provisions for replacing a majority of GOP delegates and alternates if God decides to strike the convention hall impressively BEFORE they nominate Romney? Just askin’! Timothy Cardinal Dolan should hold off on showing up until the storm has passed. He is not scheduled until the last night in anmy event.
Wow... Joe Redner just peed in his shorts ....thousands of male delegates with nothing to do ....on Monday
Joe Redner owes several of the most famous Tampa strip clubs ...
The GOP will blame the dissruption on the Ron Paul people.
Hey, the hurricane's tracking Left, so shouldn't they call it "Hurricane Mitt"?
Mr. Romney was to be formally nominated Monday
what no vote by the delegates ???
Willard wants to avoid the 40 votes that his father George got in 1964 when Goldwater got 800+ ???
That sword still swinging over Wee Willies head ???

Oh Lord. They are really going to nominate the most liberal candidate in Republican history. God Bless America on this nightmare.
It will definitely rain on their parade, won't it.
Compare the 2 pictures: Doesn't the shape of the Gulf sort of remind you of the shape of a 12 week in utero baby skull? The kind that gets aborted so often?
Willard and his GOP goons are up a creek if the convention building gets damaged or leaks in any way...
Where to hold the coronation then ???

I’ve made it clear that I don’t like Romney either. But does your hatred of him make you so blind that you do not pay any attention whatsoever?
Let’s pretend you were one of my students in college. Your assignment is to go read the news and report back to us whether the schedule now calls for the roll call of delegations on Tuesday at about the same time it was scheduled for Monday. Could the weather change plans suddenly and compress the time they have? Sure it could. Could the weather prevent a vote on the floor and cause the RNC to vote rules such as electronic voting or voting by telephone? Sure they could. I am playing the Jeopardy theme while waiting for your answer. It is an assignment that should not take you very long at all.
This is a center/right country and certainly a right-leaning party. It is a shame that more people in the primaries chose him. But that is what they did. Did we have too many people stay home or not work hard enough? I don’t know. Someday that history will be written.
We have to get rid of Obama. No, they are not the same as some here say. That is a ridiculous position. If Romney wins, I will fight him vigorously and urge others in the party to fight him where he is wrong. Politics is the art of the possible. Unfortunately, we sometimes have to compromise. But I want that to be as little as possible. I want him to fight for the conservative values for which the GOP stood under Reagan. Let’s all try to make Romney do that.
I will support Romney and watch him after the election. I have zero option from the GOP again. I just wish for once we could get a conservative as President. I would love Bachmann/Santorum....that would be considered radical around here....lol. (I switched the positions around from my tag line because I think Michele would kick some major butt and clean up our country.
Despite his flaws, I wanted Newt/Bachmann. He is the smartest guy in the room and can form the best argument.
Awww, I’ll be nice to you. I know you are embarrassed by your post and don’t want to come back. I’ll help you out here.
When you hear a report that someone will be formally nominated, it does not mean that there will be no roll call vote of the delegations. You may want to do some research about a nomination by acclamation.
Unless the weather really causes havoc, the plan is to have a roll call vote of the delegations on Tuesday at about the same time it was scheduled for Monday. The delegations that jumped early in the nominating process are going to receive some punishment, such as only having half of their voting power.
Sorry I mocked you.
As critical as I have been of Ron Paul, even I would not accuse Ron Paul of controlling the weather. The GOP-E will of course tell any self-serving lie that will expedite the separation of the GOP from any principles whatsoever (see Romney, Mitt).
No matter which of them may be elected in November, I have every expectation that we FReepers will be reasonably united in short order against the winner. If the winner is Romney, he will soon disabuse his November supporters of any notion of "holding his feet to the fire" when he repeals Obozocare only to replace it with something just about as bad and commits similar atrocities by the bushel.
I trust you. I do not and NEVER will trust Romney other than to be Romney.
No matter what the weather does, Tampa will be the scene of a national disaster this week.
RIP party of Lincoln.
Nice knowin’ ya, party of Reagan...
Why don’t you go post on a liberal/communist site?
So does this mean that the networks will now give one less day of coverage to the Republican convention vs the Democrat convention, because of this opening day cancellation?

Prayers going up that everyone down there makes it safely through the hurricane AND the violence planned by the left-wing protestors :-(
Just out of curiosity - have you ever been through a hurricane? I live in S.S and am watching it like a hawk - especially since it now seems to be tracking a bit west of where it was. Other hurricanes put me on alert and Katrina made me a believer - take no chances when a hurricane is coming.
But predicted to be Cat 1 when passing to the west of Tampa (east side always strongest) and a Cat 2 by landfall on the MS-AL border now. After Katrina, I don't care how unlikely it may be - folks around here aren't foolish enough to discount such an event until it's entered land somewhere else and has no chance of dropping back into the Gulf to re-form.
The current forecast has Tampa well east of the zero percent line for hurricane force winds. They have a 40-50% probability of tropical storm force winds, but that doesn’t seem like to me at this point.
Thanks for the kind words. I do not disagree on Romney. He was next to last on my list, just above Ron Paul. Because I am in California, I have the luxury of not having to vote for him. In a toss up state, I would have to pull the lever. Obama getting four more years is unthinkable.
I don’t suspect that many people here had him at the top of the ticket. My guess is that our opposition to his policies with which we disagree is not going to go away. Much like the DC FReepers did to Gore with “Get out of Cheney’s house” during the 2000 recount, I envision thousands of us in front of the White House chanting “Get out of Reagan’s house.”
The forecast keeps moving. It started out hugging the coast of Florida, moved a bit west, then jogged east again. Since yesterday it has been moving west again. Better safe that sorry in any case. Since it is now looking like the center is likely to be to the west of me (Biloxi area), I am keeping even closer watch and making preparations - this is no Katrina, but those on the east side of the eye always get hit hardest and it might do a Katrina and slide east once it's close to the coast (never any guarantees until it's actually inland and dissapating) - possible bad news for us if it does, but battening down and other preparations should see more inconveneiences (power outages and debris in roadways) than utter destruction.
Why would I do that?
But, the storm might mess up Romney’s hair.
Actually, this was pretty smart. Now, the media has nowhere to go, and there can be no legal actions against the RNC for anything storm related.
Of course, now, the storm has veered west, so the RNC could say, “OK. We’re on again, only later on in the day.....”
Leni
Yep, you have no choice but to prepare having a reasonable probability of a strike. The New Orleans people have to be told to prepare even if there is a low probability of a hit because they are so lame that they need to overprepare. Tampa probably doesn’t need to do that, but they will overprepare anyway.
