Egypt has deployed U.S.-made surface-to-air missiles and tanks near the border with Israel, in a breach of the 1979 peace treaty, reports the World Tribune.
Western defense sources said the Egyptian Army has deployed "a range of assets supplied by the United States." They cited main battle tanks (MBTs) and surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), particularly in the northeastern Sinai area, between the coastal city of El Arish and the border with Israel and Gaza.
Right now, all of the [Egyptian] heavy weapons have been deployed along the Israeli border, a defense source said.
The U.S.-made MBTs were identified as the M-60A3, which was exported to Egypt in the 1980s. The sources told the Tribune that the Egyptian Army has deployed between 20 and 30 of these in eastern Sinai.

Never know when you have to beat back a terrorist with a SAM
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
They lost their whole army in an afternoon, I would think they would have learned their lesson....
Hopefully some of the FR “tread heads” will post their opinions on what kind of threat is posed by the M-60A3,
Israel will hand to them again their rear ends.
They want to see how the Israelis respond. If the Israelis do nothing, more will follow. Logistically, a small Egytian force on the east side of the Suez canal is cut off, like Grant’s army at Shiloh. It’s a diplomatic gambit on the Egyptians’ part. If they can establish fortified positions on the east of Suez, they will gain a huge strategic advantage. It does bode well, and the Israelis must resist.
I have a buddy who goes there often to service the machine tools.
Just like Hitler and The Rhineland in 1936, he wanted to gauge the French reaction to him remilitarizing the Rhineland, when the French did nothing, Hitler knew he would get Austria and Czechoslovakia without a fight.
I’m not a tread head, but I’m the son of one and have been paying attention for a long time.
Those M-60s would be so much scrap if the Israelis came to town.
Not sure why the M60 is much of a big deal, those are 1960s stuff.
Egypt has nearly 900 M1 Abrams in their fleet, 1980s stuff.
No problem...Obama will simply write an executive order telling Egypt that it’s no problem as long as you aim for Christians and Jews.
The historicity of Moses and the Exodus is dubious at best. That aside, best wishes towards Israel. I suspect this is just posturing on the part of Egypt, but you never know...
I strongly suspect that those US weapons were supplied with a provision that they only be used “defensively” and kept strictly on the west side of the Suez. Besides the peace treaty with Israel, I suspect the Egyptians are in violation of obligations with respect to the U.S. They are testing us as well. They know they have a patsy in White House. If there is another Mideast war, much of the responsibility lies with Obama and Hilary.
To paraphrase Ed Koch, an American Jew would have to be crazy to vote for Obama. Look, maybe William F. Buckley’s grandfather wouldn’t let your great grandfather join the country club, but Obama’s grandfather was cheering for the Nazis when they were putting your grandparents in the ovens.
“They lost their whole army in an afternoon, I would think they would have learned their lesson....”
The problem is that they have better equipment now: made in the U.S. gear rather than third-rate Soviet gear.
So now it’s simply a matter of whether Egyptian training is any good and how brave their soldiers may be.
The U.S. really should install secret “disable” devices on things like tanks and SAMs and such when sold to third world countries.
I guess US assets are finally in play in the Middle East --AGAINST OUR ONLY ALLY!!!-- ISRAEL!! Way to go Obie!!
Maybe this is a chance for Isreal to expand their land mass. Taking Egypt would be nice spoils, and would give them plenty of room for future expansion.
Welcome to the FR. Why do you think it is Dubious?
