Jeb Bush to GOP: Time to change the tone on immigration
L.A Times ^ | 8/26/12 | Mark Z Barabak

Posted on 08/26/2012 10:34:12 AM PDT by exbrit

"My personal view is that we need to get beyond where we are," said the former Florida governor, adding a moment later, "You can't ask people to join your cause and then send a signal that you're really not wanted. It just doesn't work."

Bush has previously stated his concerns about the party's hard-line immigration stance and seemed careful on Sunday's "Meet The Press" to balance his views with a hearty endorsement of nominee-to-be Mitt Romney.

Join our cause???? Surely we need, and should demand, that those who join our country come here legally, follow the rules and come for the right reason, with allegiance to the U.S.A? Rest assured Jeb Bush, if you ever get a GOP nomination I will not vote for you

Obviously the Platform Committee completely disagrees with him. I would think that they speak for the bulk of the party.

If we don’t offer amnesty and chain migration to 15-20 million illegals, we will surely lose the Latino vote.

I’m okay with “territories” of the U.S. signing up men to serve in exchange for outright citizenship. My A-Gunner in the Crops was from Micronesia. He wasn’t a U.S. citizen but one tough SOB and I am glad I got to serve with him.
Now, out and out illegal stragglers across our border? No way. It won’t be long before too large a contingent is within our ranks and our military falters.

You know, I hate to come to this conclusion because I have actually liked some things about each Bush, the elder, the younger, and the governor, but in the end I find myself despising them more and more.

The two sons are idiots, and they must have gotten that somewhere.

George (the younger), Jeb, since when is it wrong to expect to see the laws of our nation observed by foreign nationals?

Tell us one nation on planet earth that would accept between 20 and 35 million U. S. Citizens pulling up roots, and occupying their nation in an illegal manner. The fact is, you can’t. It wouldn’t be tolerated by any nation. And in point of fact, it shouldn’t be tolerated.

You have each become an agent provocateur on behalf of foreign nationals, over the interests and healthy well being of your own nation. In my estimation, that makes you an enemy of the state.

You both have brought disgrace upon your family. You should be ashamed. Instead you find some sort of inner pride in it.

This is one fellow citizen that holds you both in contempt.

That shouldn’t surprise you, because that’s what you do with me and tens of millions of other U. S. Citizens, who recognize we are being occupied, and will not accept it or it’s supporters.

Jeb, George, you’re no different than any other traitor to our nation. Wear that label proudly assholes.

The more I hear from the Family Bush, the less I care to ever hear from another Bush family member.

They have inflicted enough on us already.

Thank you, Mitt, and bless you for NOT selecting Jeb.

Now, if we would just figure out how to get both the Family Bush and Family Clinton off the political stage, this nation would be better.

Yeah I don’t get this at all. Democrats and GOP both have members that want an amnesty plan of some sort. The problem is neither side can say how it could possibly work. Right now illegals depress wages, keep unemployment artificially high and consume much more in costs than they contribute.
GOP believes that without illegals wages will rise and thus cost of goods. Of course they will, so what? You will also lower the cost government services, lower unemployment and thus raise revenues to the Federal government.

I think far too many politicians want to be politically correct and put the old brain on cruise control instead of rationally considering the issue. Illegal entry into a nation causes a wide range of big problems, both economically and socially. If you desire amnesty it requires a premise other than “We need the illegals to become legal so they can vote for us.”
Which is all the Democrats have ever had, and which now a few in the GOP would like.

Never forgot that the best and brightest of this nation rarely go into politics. As Republicans we should simply push Jeb Bush to the Democratic party where he would be more comfortable.

The same guy whose Hispanic wife tried to smuggle thousands of dollars of designer clothing into this country - he now wants amnesty for others who break the law? Another family member also was a law breaker. Something about prescription drugs.

No wonder he wants favoritism for all law breakers!

I've said this a number of times, and I'll say it again even if it doesn't get a lot of support here.

I am 100% on board with cracking down on illegal immigrants when it's practical to do so, but the "immigration problem" this country faces isn't really an immigration problem at all. It's a welfare state problem, and focusing our efforts on illegal immigration sometimes gets in the way of dealing with the REAL PROBLEM here.

This country once thrived with plenty of "illegal immigrants" -- mainly because there really wasn't such a thing as legal immigrants. And the reason it wasn't a problem back then was that nobody -- neither U.S. citizens nor immigrants -- was given massive taxpayer-funded handouts from a nanny-state government. Does anyone here think it's a coincidence that "illegal immigration" suddenly became a problem after outright unconstitutional Federal programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid were introduced?

When lawbreakers are given amnesty, the country ceases to exist as a law abiding society. How is it different from anarchy?

No amnesty to illegals, ever! I speak as an immigrant who had to jump through hoops to acquire my US citizenship legally.

Once again: Being against illegal immigration is not the same as being against Hispanic people or Asian people or Canaidians for that matter. Put another way, being against speeding is not the same as being against driving.

This whole issue confounds me on so many intellectual levels.

If you are hispanic, please expalin to me your opinion on how having an enforcing immigration laws is some how racist and therefore, driving you to the Dems? I certainly expect Mexico and Brazil and Chile and all other nations to enforce their laws....and I don’t consider them to be mean spirited and racist. I consider them to be be independent countries enforcing duly enacted laws.

Again, what am missing here?

The Bush’s see the mexican vote as their pathway to the Presidency and could care less about the damage illegal immigration does to this Country.Jeb and the entire Bush crime family, have a sick, twisted, obsessive compulsive need to own the republican Presidency from now into eternity. They deem it their royal birthright and woe onto anyone who gets in their way. They don’t mind if the dems are in power for eight years,as long as the Bush’s rule for every other eight years after that, for as long as the eye can see is all they care about. To that end,i believe the Bush’s have gamed out a long time ago, that the ticket to that is through mexican immigration. The way to capture that vote,is by Appealing to Hispanics,by way of Jeb’s mexican wife and then his half-mexican son,George P.Bush. They want Jeb in for eight years starting in 2016,then eight years of the dems followed by George P.Bush and all by locking up the illegal alien vote. It’s all about the insane lust for power by the Bush family, nothing more!

I agree with you 100% on that point. But there are steps that can be taken parallel to any enforcement (or lack thereof) that can help offset the costs associated with illegal immigration. I've suggested that something as simple as a two-part approach to a person's legal status in the U.S. would be very effective. These two elements would be:

1. No criminal charges involving an illegal immigrant can be adjudicated in the U.S. criminal court system. An illegal alien who commits a crime is not just a "criminal" from a legal perspective, but a foreign invader. As such, these individuals should be treated as "non-uniformed combatants," and these criminal cases should come under the authority of the U.S. military.

2. No illegal immigrant has any standing in a civil court in the U.S. If legal action is brought against such a person in a civil proceeding, the illegal alien is automatically subject to a default judgement along with whatever penalties that might entail. More importantly, this would mean that no illegal alien has standing to file a civil lawsuit as a plaintiff, and therefore basically resides in this country at his or her own risk.

You and me both. GWB wasn’t my all time favorite, but for the first couple of years he was OK. However, the longer he served, the more he reminded me of what I disliked about his parents.

And now? I’d love it if all the Bushes would move to Mexico. Preferably illegally, so they could learn how illegals are treated in Mexico. And they need to shut up on abortion, immigration, taxes, Obama, Blow-job Billy and every other liberal desire of their hearts...

I’m married to a Filipina who came here LEGALLY. I adopted two children in the Philippines - LEGALLY. Both have served tours in the military as adults. My daughter-in-law is a gal my son met in the Philippines...and yesterday she LEGALLY became a US citizen.

I don’t deserve to be called a racist for opposing unlimited, illegal immigration from Mexico. I don’t want to live in Mexico, and I don’t want my home overwhelmed with Mexican culture - particularly the border culture, which is extremely violent and drug lord dominated!

I’m not a sexist for being shocked by GWB nominating an incredibly unqualified woman to the US Supreme Court. Nor am I sexist for thinking a woman’s CHOICE occurs BEFORE pregnancy begins instead of AFTER.

The senior Bush had an admirable record of service before he ran for President. Wish he had stopped with being VP. GWB was vastly superior to those he ran against...but he did a lot of harm to the ideas of conservatism. The rest of that family can kiss my butt.

Jeb Bush thinks because he married a Mexican, then the US should ignore the immigration laws and welcome illegals in with open arms.

But the reality is closer to yours and many others, conservatives marry, adopt children, and have relationships with people born elsewhere that are loving, caring and compassionate.

These illegal lovers just don’t get it.

We don’t hate foreigners.

We just don’t welcome foreigners who violate our laws and sovereignty, then make shameless demands and call us racists in our own country because we don’t tolerate their criminality.

True, as stated in post 15, the big problem is our welfare and benefit program as it draws in illegals like bees to honey (plus a lot of our own would rather get a gov’t check than work). Rampant illegal immigration is more of a symptom than a cause.

Besides a too generous welfare/benefit system, public spending and public borrowing are taking our nation & economy on a suicide dive. I still have hope some Republican politicians know this, so will vote for Romney & other GOP candidates.

If Jeb wants to see a group 'man up' on the immigration issue it's easy... Tell some third world country that we'll ‘look the other way’ if they come here and vote Republican.

Democrats will show you how to be tough on illegals IF they're being hurt by the process.

Do the above and dems will ‘send elian gonzalez’ home... They'll tell Homeland Security to ‘shoot on sight’ and TSA to harass. Southern Poverty Law Center will stamp them as a hate group.

Dems would NEVER put up with this crap.

Jeb needs counseling if his ego is so weak it has to be stroked by the gratitude of illegals. The same illegals who after kissing his butt, will turn on the average US citizen. Here's a flash Jeb, there are NO jobs. The country is BROKE. We can't afford to open the gates so you can feel good about yourself. There are LEGAL ways for people to come here. The ones who come here illegally have no respect for our laws - immigration or other. Grow up Jeb Bush. Get a job with the New York Times... fit in...
