AP-GfK poll: Raise taxes to save Social Security
pioneer press ^ | 8-26-12 | STEPHEN OHLEMACHER JENNIFER AGIESTA

In previous polls, most of the options for addressing Social Security scored poorly among the public, which helps explain why Congress hasn't embraced them. But the AP-GfK poll forced people to make a choice: Raise taxes or cut benefits? Raise the retirement age or cut monthly payments?

Democrats, Republicans and independents all favored raising the retirement age over cutting monthly payments. But there was a big divide on raising taxes. Sixty-five percent of Democrats and 53 percent of independents supported higher taxes, compared with just 38 percent of Republicans.

make Social Security MEANS-TESTED.

Interested in how this would be done, based on income, assets, or....?

More BS from the Associated Presstitutes. Nowhere in their bogus survey, do they give respondents a third option: CUT SPENDING IN OTHER PROGRAMS!

Eliminate the Dept of Energy, Commerce, Education, HUD, AmeriCorps. Cut Agriculture, State, Justice, EPA and Treasury in HALF. Trim some from every other department as well (yes, even Defense). Kick all the deadbeats off SSI, eliminate “crazy checks”. Bingo, plenty of money for SS.

Sounds about right - income and assets. The idea is to assure people a certain standard of living in old age - so that would work.

So if I refi and pull all the equity out of my house and put the dough in my safety deposit box, I’m sufficiently poor to keep the money coming?

What is the definition of payroll tax?

Some say it is FICA tax. Some say it is income tax. And some say it is all taxes witheld from your payroll. Does anyone know what it really is? And why do all the media outlets not make this more clear?

Like Medicaid there will be a “look-back” period where they’ll check for stuff like that. So it’s better to do it early and get it safely tucked away.

...and sorry, you’ll have to do better than a safe deposit box - they’ll check those too.

Sounds like my plan of marijuana cultivation and corn liquor distillation is going to be the only route to retirement sustenance.

Raising the retirement age is the same thing as cutting benefits. Heck, why not make the age 106 and solve the SS problem once and for all?

Government has made thieves of us all by taking money from one and giving to another. There is no SS trust fund, and people paying in now are going to get screwed. There’s no way around it. The best thing to do is privatize SS as has been done successfully in other countries, but apparently Americans are as attached to the SS ponzi scheme as Britons are to their dinosaur NHS. So, I guess we just go on as we are until the system collapses.
