Yes, there are still Cayuga and Seneca in New York. But their numbers pale in comparison to those which were forcibly relocated to Oklahoma Territory.
Tribal headquarters are a function of numbers and concentrations, not original (whatever that means) location.
I have always considered my self a native. What’s the big deal?
Thanks. I didn’t realize that. There are still many tribes located in that region of NY, especially farther west. I think the map shows the rough location of the confederacy in the 1700s, so yes, it is outdated.
I believe they are trying to say African Americans who have become Muslim are indigenous. But I would think the very fact that they originated from Africa disproves that assertion.
You're right. But then, with the possible exception of West Africa, there are no indigenous people anywhere. Every nation, again excepting West Africa, was peopled by people who came from somewhere else.
I think the Canadians have it right. They refer to what we call Indians as "First Nation." They got here before anyone else did, but the land was vacant when they arrived.
Unfortunately you have to buy the magazine to read the article.
Here's a timeline from another site.
As a member of the Santee (Dakota) Sioux, I would like to say I DID NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA IN 08, and WILL NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA in 2012.
