Study: Suburbs are major source of guns used in Chicago crimes(IL)

A study of guns seized by Chicago police shows that suburban gun shops are a main source of guns used in crimes in the city.

The research shows that some 29 percent of the guns recovered on Chicago's streets between 2008 and the end of March were bought in the Cook County suburbs. Lake County, Ind., was the second largest source, accounting for 6 percent of the weapons, and other counties surrounding Chicago — including Lake County, Ill., and Will, DuPage and Kane counties — were also among the top 10 sources.

Two gun stores in suburban Lyons and Riverdale accounted for more than 10 percent of the guns recovered.

---------------------cut----------------------------

The study covers 17,230 guns the ATF successfully traced after they were recovered in Chicago. Many guns can't be traced because of their age or other factors, said Seth Bour, the Crime Lab's deputy director.

What were the total number of guns confiscated?

How many of the guns were used in violent crimes?

How many of the guns were confiscated from citizens exercising their Constitutional rights, but who violated mala prohibita infringements?

Over what period were these guns confiscated?

These numbers remind me of the 90% Mexican gun hoax.

Roseanna Ander serves as the founding Executive Director of the University of Chicago Crime Lab (2008) and the University of Chicago Urban Education Lab (2011). The University of Chicago Crime Lab and Urban Education Lab each works to help develop, implement and evaluate promising social policy interventions in a way that generates objective outcome data about what works and why, that is a rigorous as the gold standard for evidence used in medicine, another area where lives are at stake. It is based in part on the success of MIT’s “Poverty Action Lab” which has quickly become a world leader in applying similarly rigorous research methods to understanding how to address poverty and other social problems in the developing world. In January 2010, Ms. Ander was appointed to the International Association of Chiefs of Police Research Advisory Committee and to the Illinois Juvenile Justice Commission. In March 2011, Ms. Ander was named co-chair of Chicago Mayor-Elect Rahm Emanuel’s Public Safety Transition Committee. Prior to joining the University of Chicago, Ms. Ander oversaw the Joyce Foundation’s Gun Violence program, which makes annual grants of $3.3 million to support research and public policies aimed at reducing deaths and injuries from firearms. Ms. Ander also served as the developer and lead program officer for the Foundation’s grantmaking on Early Childhood Education. Prior to joining Joyce, she was a Soros Justice Fellow with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office where she worked on a range of issues including truancy, domestic violence and consumer protection. Ms. Ander has also worked for the Harvard Injury Control Center, the Harvard Center for Children’s Health, and the Harvard Project on Schooling and Children. I did a quick search for this study, but was unable to find it. Freepers are talented people. If anyone can find the actual study, I would like to see if it contains answers to any of the pertinent questions.

I am still fuzzy on the point of the article. It is my understanding that having a gun in the city is illegal so, the persons carrying the guns into the city have broken law number 1. The assumption being that IF the legally registered firearms shop did not sell the individual the gun following LEGAL processes (background check etc), then the crime would not have occurred? I think we need to re-examine our expectations that making something illegal will stop the activity.

How many of those guns were stolen from the legal owners, but still attributed to the gun shop the original purchase traced back to?

> we need to outlaw the suburbs.

Trust me. The Left is working on this. Making cars and transportation fuels and registration fees prohibitively expensive will make the suburbs available only to the elitists. Everybody else must live in the cities, where they can be more easily controlled and monitored.

What they’re trying to say is that their totalitarian gun laws would work if only those who refuse to live in the cities would be under the same totalitarian rules.

So, lessee: if the suburbs were eliminated a source of weapons, then the study would find that the guns used were coming from other states. Then, if the other states all banned guns, the source for the guns for violent crimes would be other countries. No matter what anyone does, the violent slimes will get weapons.

Needless to say, the authors of the study won't address the real cause of the violence/misuse of firearms: an undisciplined and unmentioned thug culture by a segment of the population. Ain't the guns, honey, it's the thugs.

No.

Gang-banger straw-purchasers are the source of most guns in Chicago.

It would be racist for the suburban gun stores to deny their purchases based on the color of their skin, leaving them open to a civil rights lawsuit, would it not?

They didn’t say how many came from the city of Chicago.

But they did say at the end:
The numbers don’t mean gun stores are violating any rules, as guns are often stolen from their legal owners or bought legally by “straw purchasers” who pass them to criminals who would be prohibited from buying firearms, Ander said.

I wonder if the 4% from Wisconsin was when Illinois residents came to vote illegally in Wisconsin.

The solution is obvious. Keep the criminals from leaving the city. If Chicago kept it’s criminals in jail, or forbade them from traveling outside of the city limits the problem would be solved.

A sure way to prevent suburban gun sales leading to city crimes is to open gun stores in cities.

(its a green thing to do: less gas expended by thugs, as they patronize local gun stores rather than longer drives to the ‘burbs)

okay. First of all -- STOO-PID Study!

Since there are NO Gun Stores in Chicago, and NO Guns sold in any kind of Chicago stores, like the Sports Dept of a Wal-Mart, where do these MORONS think they'll come from? The 'Gun Fairy'? Ergo, those who live South go to Riverdale, East to Indiana, West to Lyons and North to ... well you get the idea. So yeah.. the guns are bought in Suburbs. HUGE SHOCK!.. ya dingbats.

But here's an idea for you Mr Dan Hinkel of the Tribune. If you don't like it that these suburban gun shops are selling guns that wind up in gang-banger hands they could just stop selling firearms to all Blacks and Hispanics. How about that? It makes sense since they apparently can't control themselves and act responsible. At least that's what you're inferring there Bub. They're 'abusing' their 2nd Amendment Right so just take it away from them. Forget that FBI background check that they passed, they're ALL potential criminals anyway. Right Dan.

I have the solution. Build a giant wall around the City of Chicago and cut it off entirely from the rest of the State. It’s for their own good. Allow only two points of access. Say one at O’Hare and the other through the Skyway.

Chicago gangs don’t have to go far to buy guns

BY FRANK MAIN

Staff Reporter

You might think the Deep South is the biggest source of the firearms in the hands of Chicago’s criminals.

Maybe you heard about the less-restrictive gun laws in the South or the high-profile cases the feds have brought against gun traffickers moving weapons from Mississippi and other states to Chicago — the Dixie pipeline.

But the truth is most guns recovered in crimes here were originally bought in Illinois.

More specifically, in Cook County.

And the No. 1 supplier of those weapons is just a short drive from Chicago, Chuck’s Gun Store in south suburban Riverdale.

Gun Advocate Wants Priest’s ‘Snuff’ Comments Investigated
Nathan Burchfiel
Staff Writer

(CNSNews.com) - A gun rights advocate wants the Justice Department to investigate a Catholic priest who during a weekend anti-gun rally threatened to “snuff out” a Chicago gun store owner.

As Cybercast News Service reported earlier, Rev. Michael Pfleger said Saturday in comments aimed at Chuck’s Gun Shop owner John Riggio, “we’re going to find out and snuff you out.”

Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina’s Church in Chicago, told the crowd “we’re going to snuff out John Riggio, we’re going to snuff out legislators that are voting ... against our gun laws and we’re coming for you because we are not going to sit idly.”

To “snuff” can mean to sniff, inhale, or extinguish. It is also commonly used as a slang term for “to kill.”

Pfleger made the comments during an anti-gun rally sponsored by Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. Pfleger and his church are active in anti-gun and anti-gang efforts in Chicago.

In a letter to Assistant U.S. Attorney General Wan Kim obtained by Cybercast News Service, Second Amendment Foundation President Alan Gottlieb requested an investigation of the threat and defended Riggio’s character.

“Mr. Riggio is the operator of a legal business that operates under both Illinois state law and federal statute,” he wrote. “He has harmed nobody to my knowledge, and yet he has been repeatedly subjected to harassment, character assassination and now, what appears to be a threat of bodily harm.”

Gottlieb said he viewed Pfleger’s comments as “a serious threat to Mr. Riggio’s safety and civil rights” and urged Kim to investigate.

The real question unanswered is how many of the recovered guns were “walked” from Indiana gun shops to Chicago street gangs by ATF like they did in the border states to Mexico?

ATF has been running a domestic version of “Fast and Furious” at home and arming big city street gangs using the same failed rationale as F&F. Of course, the ATF is silent and the MSM will not investigate. Calling Sharyl Attkisson of CBS News.

I have managed to dig up some more information:

The study was from 2008 through March of 2012.

I have not been able to find the numbers of guns confiscated during this period. For an earlier period, to use the Chicago term “Firearm Recoveries”, are as follow:

2001 10,084

2002 10,182

2003 10,033

2004 10,509

2005 9,856

2006 13,677

Interesting data. Note that the average is considerably over 10,000 firearms per year.

The years covered in the study appear to be 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and three months of 2012. That should be about 50,000 firearms “recovered”. Yet the study only consists of 17,230. Quite a discrepancy. Of course, everything could be explained in the full study, if we were able to read it.

It is not clear how many of the guns “recovered” are confiscated during crimes, confiscated from citizens who are simply guilty of possessing a firearm against Chicago law, or are simply turned in to police by citizens.

From an article in 2008:

“Last year, Chicago police seized about 7,400 guns and received 6,000 at voluntary turn-ins. Over the past decade, Chicago police have confiscated an average of 10,800 guns per year.”
