Rove's Next Swing State: Oregon

Republican super-strategist Karl Rove has his eye on an unlikely state for the GOP to target in future presidential elections: Oregon.

At POLITICO's Playbook Breakfast in Tampa Monday, the former White House aide-turned-American Crossroads adviser said both Wisconsin and Michigan could potentially flip to Mitt Romney's column this year. Asked if there's a third state on his wish list -- not necessarily for 2012, but for future elections -- here's what Rove said, via Jennifer Haberkorn:

Oregon, which mystifies me. Oregon, as you may recall, was a battleground in 2000 and this time around there is a little bit of evidence that Obama has some difficulty there.

I think part of it is that you do have this sort of weird element …centered around Portland that looks at Obama as a dangerous reactionary. But you also have something going out there, sort of this libertarian, Western, iconoclastic I’m-not-going-to-be-put-in-a-box. But something’s going on in Oregon. They’ve got a 30-30 statehouse. And Republicans came within 15,000 votes of wining the governorship and yet its the most unchurched state in the union. So it’s a weird conglomeration. Oregon might be next.

I’m surprised Rove had time for this.

Shouldn’t he be operating the Weather Machine(TM) to control Issac?

I think he was just spotted planting explosives on the levees.

Why? You don’t like reading about someone smarter than you? He did engineer two presidential victories...not an easy thing to do in those two elections.

He also diverted resources from Bush’s campaigns to Oregon and other states at the last minute, resulting in both elections being closer than they should have been.

Enough votes are always “found” in Multnomah County to put the Democrat over the top in statewide races.

Multnomah County is one of the most corrupt leftwing machines in the country, but it flies under the radar because Oregon is a relatively small state and has a reputation for “clean” government.

But there may be enough "libertarian" Democrats in Portland's suburbs and in the rest of the state to put Oregon in play. If Oregon is a squeaker, Romney will win with more than 300 electoral votes.

Only if you carve out the Southern half (Except Ashland) and all of the Eastern part of the State and have it join far Northern California to create the 51st State of Jefferson. I say “far” Northern California because most idiots in media think SF is Northern California.

Oregon’s a lost cause, sadly to say.

Bill Ayres has been visiting Rep. Pete DeFazio a few too many times in Eugene at UofO, resulting in capturing the interest of Breitbart, so I hear........massive voter fraud in the works?

Oregon did vote down Gay Marriage initiatives 60/40.

Small Businesses are closing right and left......creating the opportunity for a wedge issue.

Karl, if you are listening, all you need to do is create a trail of crumbs for Small Businesses to follow, leading them away from Ideoloical Loyalty toward Self-Preservation

If it is Close the CT is considered a lean to for Zero, Oregon might be a battleground state. (Except for Portland/Salem and Eugene, it is a conservative state!)

I’d be very happy to be wrong. I also live in California which I also feel is a lost cause.

I’m glad to hear we might be a battleground. The State Senate is also close...something like 17D’s to 14R’s. Our District candidate in last election only lost by 500 votes to a well entrenched D.

We are working for him again in a new district formed in the last redistricting. My surprise has been the number of Republicans that don’t cast their vote (mail in) and thus the D’s continue to win.

So, I spend lots of telephone time urging Republicans to not give up just because we live in Oregon....the 30 to 30 in the House is one of the issues I use to “SHOCK” Oregon Republicans of the reality that is occurring in Oregon...most don’t know we are that close and have the possibility of more balance in this state.
