Feds: Too few Americans ‘turn to government for assistance’ [Unbelievable!]
examiner.com ^ | Monday, August 27,2012

More Americans rely on their families for assistance than the government, so federal officials have undertaken an effort to help people to apply for federal assistance.

“Given that only 15 percent of you turn to government assistance in tough times, we want to make sure you know about benefits that could help you,” USA.gov announced today. The ”government made easy’ website has created a “help for difficult financial times” page for people to learn more about the programs.

The government got that statistic from a poll asking Americans what helps them the most during tough times. Here are the results:

From CNN

We’re looking at the net of what’s been added and subtracted since 2008, and it’s a big positive. The largest category of transfer payments, of course, consists of the three major entitlements: Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Indeed, they rose in total by 28% since the fourth quarter of 2008. What’s surprising is that other transfer payments, all told, rose even faster, by 38%, and accounted for over half of the total increase.

Among the fast-growing categories: unemployment insurance and food stamps, which together expanded by 120% to $211 billion.

“The federal government administers nearly 80 different overlapping federal means-tested welfare programs. Social Security and Medicare are not part of this category and not included in the figures in this chart,” a statement released on Wednesday by Sen. Sessions’ office reads.

“[S]ince 2000 Medicaid has increased from 34 million people to 54 million in 2011 and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps) from 17 million to 45 million in 2011,” according to a statement released on Wednesday by Sen. Sessions’ office.

But here’s our favorite part: “Spending on food stamps alone is projected to reach nearly $800 billion over the next decade.”

The Senate Budget Committee Republican staff under Ranking Member Jeff Sessions [R-AL] on Wednesday released this depressing chart:

What ever happened to being responsible and relying on your FAMILY when times are hard????

When rough times come, Libs have destroyed the family and turned Americans into wards of the state. And way too many Americans have been comfortable with it because they think it means the “other guy” is paying for it.

Give BHO another 4 years screwing over the American economy and we ALL will be queued up at the welfare office for their damned “benefits!”

This is directed at the quote you posted.

Let’s assume you set up a savings account when you were young and contributed to it all of your working life. When you quit working you begin to withdraw money, a little at a time, for your living expenses.

The above describes both Social Security and Medicare. I paid into these all my working life. When I retired I began to withdraw some of what I paid in.

The dictionary defines entitlement as, “a right granted by law or contract, especially to financial benefits from the government.” Yes, Social Security and Medicare payments come from the government. But they NOT are benefits. They are merely repayment of what I paid in for years.

I am sick and tired of Social Security and Medicare being described as entitlements. IMHO, they are NOT.

SSI, welfare, FI, AFDC, etc, et al. THOSE are entitlements.

Believe me, I wish I could have opted out of Social Security and Medicare and run my own funding. I’d be light years ahead of where I am now.

One day a week I volunteer as a triage interviewer at a local food bank. And the majority of folks I interview look similar to the young lady on the right. It amazes me how obese people can become by living off food stamps.

Not so surprising as home economics, where teaching young people (and even some older people) how to purchase for, and prepare, healthy meals, is usually the first class that is eliminated when public schools crunch numbers. In some places there are no ways to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables with the cards AND I bet the people just don't want to bother learning to cook/eat better.

"'Given that only 15 percent of you turn to government assistance in tough times, we want to make sure you know about benefits that could help you,' . . . The government got that statistic from a poll asking Americans what helps them the most during tough times. Here are the results:

"Savings 44%
"Family 21%
"Credit cards/loans 20%
"Government assistance 15%"

A poll? Ask for what really happened when a need arose.

I am in my 70s, get SS, and medical stuff.. though so far I have not had a need for a doctor or drug -- in decades.

Of course I totally disagree with what seems to be the majority opinion to cut all programs across-the-board.. ridding the various programs of waste and abuse seems more logical to me as a first step.

Contumely welcome.. see if you can top the insults that FReepers who have snakes as pets I enraged by criticizing people who loose their pet snakes into the surrounding countryside. Most of them finally settled down when I admitted that I did not know that their ball python was a cute little python rarely more than four feet or so. And they would never, never be so cruel to the snake. :)

Actually, this piece makes me think that some weasely little bureaucratic pencil pusher is going all out to protect his government position, especially considering the possibility that job cuts loom in the near future. What better way than to convince the moochers of society that they need more entitlements.
