Bill Nye ‘The Science Guy’ Hits Evolution Deniers
abcnews.go.com ^ | Aug 27, 2012 | Kevin Dolak

Posted on 08/27/2012 1:42:32 PM PDT by Tailgunner Joe

In a clip posted to online knowledge forum Big Think via YouTube, former children’s show host Bill Nye spoke out against the denial of evolution, saying such views harm young people especially and hamper scientific progress.

Nye, who hosted the educational show “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” which aired on PBS Kids from 1993 through 1998, made the statements in a clip posted online on Thursday, and has since been viewed over one million times. In the clip, Nye praises the United States for its contribution to technological innovation, but says that the denial of evolution is unique to the country.

“People still move to the United States. And that’s largely because of the intellectual capital we have, the general understanding of science,” Nye said in the clip. “When you have a portion of the population that doesn’t believe in that, it holds everybody back, really.

“Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. It’s like, it’s very much analogous to trying to do geology without believing in tectonic plates. You’re just not going to get the right answer. Your whole world is just going to be a mystery instead of an exciting place,” he added.

Nye made a three-stop tour through New Hampshire earlier this summer to tout President Obama’s education policies while making a push for science and engineering programs. He has endorsed Obama’s reelection bid.

So when does the next evolution happen, and I assume the creatures coming out at that level will then have humans like Bill Nye served up on their tacos like we do with the lesser species before us? Maybe they'll keep us as pets, but then some people like Obama for instance do eat dogs. That's another thing. They pick on Romney for putting his dog on top of the car, but at least he didn't put him on the BBQ.

[Nye] says that the denial of evolution is unique to the [United States].

Really? Saudi Arabia believes in evolution? Nigeria and Congo believe in evolution? Most countries in the world still believe in witchcraft.

Nye has always been a piss poor science teacher who thinks he is wonderful. He was and is a persona that was created.

Too bad a REAL scientist, ala an moon walk astronaut, is not available to talk about real science (physics etc.)

Nye is exhibit A as a failure of science education. (without even touching the creationist theology stuff)

Meh...Nye is just angry because he has no idea how life began.

“Odd” how scientists proclaim to know exactly how life began but are unwilling to on record in the case of a pregnancy to identify WHEN life begins. MILLIONS of observable pregnancies and there is no conclusion.

Well, of course there is the goal of keeping abortion on demand a legal option.

Like forcing a Catholic university to provide "free" birth control? Like instructing kindergartners in the concepts of same sex "life-partners"?

Because that's not a scientific question. Scientists can tell you a lot about how life begins and develops, but the question of when in that process life has begun is a moral, ethical and theological question, not a scientific question.

Nye then goes on to urge adults not to deny the teaching of evolution to young people. “And I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, in your world that’s completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that’s fine, but don’t make your kids do it because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future.

Or in other words, "Don't fill you kids' heads with that superstitious god crap".

If he isn't going to be pressed on the "G" question, then why cover the "rest" of the controversy?

If God did not create the universe, is Bill suggesting that God was "surprised" by the Big Bang? God(s?) "sprang forth" from the Big Bang? Or God doesn't exist?

Or is he willing to consider that "evolution" was of God's creation?

He stumps that "only America" persists in such beliefs. Really? No other nationality or religions have faith in God as creator?

Not until this bunch discovers that 'hot steamy pot of primordial slime' can evolution be taken seriously.

So long as public education is by law required to teach this fairy tale to our young, this nation will never end abortion as the scientific methodology for birth control.

The proper teaching on creation is found in the Torah, including the reason for the harmonious design of DNA. The Double Helix has much to teach us about Ethics and Sexuality, but this can only be perceived through the lens of a Hebrew understanding of the Universe and can best be expressed in Hebrew. One thing that Christianity did get right is that “In the Beginning was the Word,”. Information always precedes fabrication, Always.

Too bad we can’t post excerpts from The Onion. They did a great article on this guy a few years ago, “reporting” that Nye had died in a vinegar-baking soda explosion.

“Palestinians” believe in evolution. They teach school children that Jews are descended from the offspring of pigs and monkeys.

“My church teaches creation, but it doesn’t deny evolution.”, YOU need to find a new church. If a “church” cannot get Genesis right then EVERYTHING else they “teach” is suspect.

Genesis isn’t science, nor reported nor measured in scientific terms. There are two creation stories in genesis. They conflict. Which one do you believe?

I’ve heard it put thusly: If Genesis is a myth, then sin is a myth. Look around.
