Fried chicken, Pizza and Milkshakes: Fast Food Boom in Baghdad
Emirates 24/7 ^ | Monday, August 27, 2012

Chance to relax in clean surroundings over a meal out is worth the gamble

Baghdad's embattled residents can finally get their milkshakes, chili-cheese dogs and buckets of crispy fried chicken. Original recipe or extra spicy, of course.

A wave of new American-style restaurants is spreading across the Iraqi capital, enticing customers hungry for alternatives to traditional offerings like lamb kebabs and fire-roasted carp.

Iraqi entrepreneurs and investors from nearby countries, not big multinational chains, are driving the food craze. They see Iraq as an untapped market of increasingly adventurous eaters where competition is low and the potential returns are high.

They might as well, as the Muslims and A-rabs own most of the fast food slop joints in the U.S. now...Not to mention nearly every small market, liquor store and greedy mart etc.

I was TDY in Baghdad in 1983. There weren’t many inexpensive restaurants around the US mission so I ate most of my meals standing up at a schwarma cart. A good one cost less than a buck, and I had a couple of Saddam’s plain clothes security goons watching out for me. I would’ve killed for a Popeye’s or a BK.

I always thought it a little funny. America and similar countries seem always to be in desperate need of “diversity”. Yet in any medium size city you can find cuisine from dozens of countries. I have been to 32 “non-white” countries, and the variety of food in most of them is non-existent...I get bored to tears eating the same krap every day.

I’m in Mexico right now, and unless you are in one of the large cities like Mexico City, Puebla, Guadalajara, Monterrey, all that is available is Mexican food. Even in some of the larger cities, the choice is limited to basically Italian, Japanese, and Chinese. The Italian food is basically Mexican food. If you can find Japanese it uses all of the wrong vegetables and spices. Chinese food is iffy, except in Mexicali where there is a sizable Chinese population for some reason.

But the US is not diverse enough.

I think that moochelle should go to Baghdad and personally set these Iraqis on the right path as to junk food and “git their minds right” on what to eat.
