The Beginning of the End
Red State ^ | 8/28/2012 | Erick Erickson

Today marks the beginning of the end of Campaign 2012. This week, here in Tampa, Republicans will go through a well scripted event designed to make Mitt Romney their nominee. Democrats will reciprocate next week in Charlotte, NC.

The GOP’s convention almost became unscripted with a heavy handed move designed to ensure a coronation and shut out the grassroots from nomination fights. According to press reports, the Romney campaign is in retreat on this issue and the grassroots have won. They should not get complacent.

Regardless of that hiccup, the energy in Tampa is much different from 2008.

In 2008, the crowd had a lot of energy for Sarah Palin, but little for John McCain. Privately, the crowd would whisper that the odds were against them. Here in Tampa, the crowd is struggling with a feeling of victory. They think they can win.

Both sides think they can win, but privately, in real and honest assessments, even the base is capable of a reality check. The reality check in Tampa is that momentum is with the GOP. The Democrats, unable to run against the economy, intend to make the election about the female uterus, not an economic recovery. At 8.3% unemployment, people are much more interested in putting food on their tables than over killing kids.

The mood in Tampa is upbeat and not just in public.

This is the beginning of the end. We are now in the homestretch for Campaign 2012. Thank God it is almost over.

And to think...how much 0bama has added to it in 3 years.

“the private sector is doing fine...”

We are no longer fighting the primaries, but they got the message during the primaries that their Conservative efforts were NOT WANTED, so some folks accept that as the final word.

Far be it for me to attempt to interfere in the finely nuanced campaign waged by the Mittbots ~ uh, you guys are going to mount a campaign, right? It's not just smoke and mirrors at the convention ~ there's something planned somewhere?

Been looking around ~ no one has signs up anywhere around here.

The whole area continues the urban development initially located around Boston and New York.

Most of the current development around DC, and now lurching towards Richmond, is private sector. We've had incredible population growth in Virginia and now in North Carolina.

Did you realize NC is one of America's major manufacturing and industrial centers now, and for the last couple of decades has been #2 among states in total value of agricultural production ~ a lot of that having to do with 5 million pigs (snork).

Your are so on-target. It has been so evident that there are so many whiny, spoiled brats calling themselves ‘conservatives’, Christians, or Tea-Partiers, that are totally pissed THEIR annointed one was not nominated they’d just as soon burn down the house as vote for the consensus candidate. This is Politics 101, people. It’s about everybody getting SOME of what they wanted, not all.

Anybody bought groceries lately? My wife says that fresh produce is spoiling in the store because people can’t afford to buy it any longer.

Beef prices were great last year (due to drought, they were slaughtering stock to save on feed costs). Not so much this year - I’ve seen sales on pork & chicken, but not beef (and even these sale prices are high).

I’ve been buying the “soon to be past sale date” meats that go on sale, then freezing them to kill whatever might be brewing in there. They don’t taste as good as fresh, but better than none, I suppose.

What do you have against Conservatives, Christians and Tea-Partiers? Were it not for us, the political landscape would have looked much different after the 2010 mid-terms than now if Democrats still controlled The House.

Look, I supported Newt in the primaries... but I would have gladly gotten behind Herman Cain, Michelle Bachman, Rick Perry, or even Rick Santorum... but the RNC had the deck stacked in favor of their chosen golden boy and have always done so since the Reagan/Ford showdown in 1976, which is how we got McCain last time around.

Conservatives aren't whining because "our guy" didn't win... we're upset with the same old crap every 4 years. WE DON'T WANT ANY MORE RINOS!!!

As for "burning down the house"... maybe that is exactly what needs to happen to the RNC/GOPe.

Mittbott? You’re using a W-I-D-E paint roller there.

I hate it when conservatives act like liberals. I believe we’re smarter and more principled; maybe I’m wrong.

You need to peg that with a good ol' (/s) 'cause the problem is THERE IS NO CONSENSUS CANDIDATE.

Hope you didn't get that idea just because people despise Obama and want to get rid of him in this election. Doesn't mean the winner is loved ~ or even barely tolerated. He's already on double deep secret probation with the greater number of Republican voters as it is so he'd better not screw it up ~ and I know you guys so much want to do that ~ just totally screw up everything ~ just to show us who's boss.

Just a few years back Fairfax County Virginia had numerous herds of dear ~ so many that you didn't need a lawnmower ~ the state game folks said there were well over 100,000 deer in this one small area.

Well, this Summer we started having fewer and fewer deer. My lawn needs cut but they simply aren't out there. I think people are doing a bit of culling.

The better choice for America is Romney.

I can honestly say that I have no idea which is worse, Romney or Obama, both have the same father.
