How could cannabis alter the teenage brain?

"When a teenager smokes cannabis are they permanently damaging their brain and dulling their intellect for a lifetime?

The dangers of smoking cannabis, and the potential health benefits, have been a source of controversy for many years.

The latest study on the drug suggested heavy and prolonged cannabis smoking as a teenager resulted in a permanently lower IQ. You can read Dominic Hughes's report on the findings here.

But how could cannabis have this effect on the brain and why might teenagers be particularly susceptible?"

Another "MJ Permanently hurts your brain" piece ~ sounds pretty reasonable, but the permanent damage part made me sit up and pay attention

That 'splains so much from Obama's incredible ignance to the question of where do Democrats come from.

There are other articles on the same BBC page involving other studies, etc. Worth reading.

Now ~ whoops ~ wait a minute (GOES to WINDOW) (SHOUTS) "Hey you kids, get off my lawn" (WINDOW SLAMS SHUT) ~ You get the idea why that's really necessary these days.

How could cannabis alter the teenage brain?

Make it more interested than it would otherwise be in sex, drugs, rock & roll, and junkfood?

Is that possible?

Obama was a Choom guy,
Puff, puff, puff.
Fried his brain,
Sure enough.

Then came the Con,
From Chi to DC,
Where incompetence can hide
AND be very PC.

Nobel Prize, and Corporate Jet,
Goes to the Choom guy,
Puff, puff, puff.

“How could cannabis alter the teenage brain?”

______

Well in many cases the afore mentioned brain is very small, Kind of like a knot to keep the body from unraveling and there for very susceptible to recreational chemicals/s

The longitudinal study results of this hypothesis can be tested anywhere there are Old Hippies.

What is missing in this discussion is - what IS cannabis?

Is it a plant that people have dried the leaves of and smoked for over a 1,000 years? Or is it the doctored concoction that people have manipulated to increase the potency more than 10 times?

I have heard many people from my generation say things like, “well everybody did that when we were in college, and everybody turned out OK.” They don't seem to understand that was was called “pot” in the ‘60s, and what is called “pot” today - are two completely different animals!

Thanks for the clarity. I was going to say I turned out to be a very successful engineer so I wasn’t effected by it back in the 70s. Today’s pot isn’t the same. I wonder if the low power stuff is even available today.

I've read about some that's carefully bred and grown hydroponically in very controlled conditions that is as you describe. I have doubts that's really an accurate assesment of what's commonly sold on the street.

Dried and smoked the leaves? That’s the first problem right there.

LOL! The article talks about an 8% variation between the teenage years and the age of 38.

Yet someone one the net who make a profession of administering IQ test says:

The norm group with which your test score is compared, has an average score of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. A standard deviation is a measure of the spread, in this case of the IQ score. If the standard deviation is 15, 68 percent of the norm group scores between 85 (100 minus 15) and 115 (100 plus 15).

As I undeerstand it, that means 'standard' IQ tests have a 30 point spread. If their IQ drops 8%, that would translate to 12.5 points [assuming they started with an IQ of 100].

The site also says:

In comparison to the entire population, your IQ score will increase until you reach 'adulthood' and will decrease as you get older. This is simply a consequence of the maturation of the brain and an increasing understanding and vocabulary.

As people get older, it becomes more difficult to focus and the quality of their memory decreases. This leads to a decrease in performance, although the absolute decrease is often minor.

From here: http://www.123test.com/iq-scores-and-differences/

-----

Sorry, but with the standard deviation and aging factor, I see this as other correlation-means-causation study, nothing more.

Our bigger concern is how the unionized education system
alters the teenage brain...

It makes them allergic to work.

Or in the case of some of my former classmates, it makes them hold down jobs as busboys and cab drivers at age 50 because they spent all of their formative years getting high instead of studying.
