GOP Rules Committee Rapidly Moving to Shut Out Grassroots at 2:00 p.m. Today (It's not over)

At 2:00 p.m. today in Tampa, the Republican National Committee, led by Team Romney, is moving to shut down conservative grassroots activists. I’ve been on the phone with several individuals involved in the fight who tell me that the fight is not over, it is only just starting.

Specifically, the media is reporting that the rules fight is over because Team Romney is abandoning Ben Ginsberg’s effort to allow candidates to control delegates. Under an initial proposal, delegates would, in effect, be chosen by the presumed nominee’s campaign and not based on votes in the states and delegate selection processes in the states.

That issue appears resolved, but several people I’ve spoken to this morning make clear that Team Romney and the RNC establishment are using that compromise as a red herring to distract from two major rules change proposals that would decimate Republican grassroots and prevent upstart political campaigns.

Reports that the floor fight threat is over might be designed to calm the grassroots and get them to ignore what is coming at 2 o’clock.

The first rule to be proposed is one that would give the Republican National Committee the power to change rules between conventions with a three-quarters vote of the RNC. One source tells me, “With a Republican President, of course this is doable. Everybody will roll over if a President Romney asks them too. They’ll be able to get Ben Ginsberg’s proposal next year.”

In other words, if Team Romney prevails in this rules change, they don’t have to worry about Ben Ginsberg not getting his way today on the delegate changes. They’ll be able to do it later when the press and grassroots are not watching.

The second rules change would front load winner takes all primaries.

It's not over!! Romney is trying to give us the go around

WTF is with the distractions at the start of the convention??? They couldn’t have ironed all this out months ago?

My delegation from VA is on to this and they are not going to compromise. They voted unaminously against the Ginsberg thing and will do the same again.

Red flags went up for me when they started declaring the fight over. The GOPe doesn’t just give up that easily unless they are surrendering to liberals.

These “grassroots activists” who caused this whole mess are Ron Paul supporters who lied about their allegiance in order to get delegate slots. They truly believe in a Ron Paul insurgency.

I agree that changing these rules would have long-term unintended consequences and would not be a good thing, but the original intent was to shut down an infiltration by dishonest people who are trying very hard to make trouble at the convention.

Over the years, the GOP-E has changed delegate selection so they could try for a more unanimous anointing. The Paulistinians took advantage of that this year and the GOP-E panicked and is over reacting. Now we have a situation with two “wrong” sides. What needs to happen is to have the states go back to the earlier process, where the candidates select their delegates and people vote for them, as happens in Tennessee (among others), not stifling what few modes of input people still have.

They hate conservatives.

They are INTENTIONALLY PICKING A FIGHT WITH CONSERVATIVES at their convention

SO THAT

Romney gets to distance himself from conservatism in the eyes of the electorate,

AND

run to the LEFT for liberal votes.

Isn’t that obvious?

The RINO Romney WILL NOT ALLOW DISSENSION
to his RINO decrees, or discussion
of the fact that he is Democrat RINO who pushes
every single DNC agenda (and claims otherwise
even AFTER imposing them, himself).

This will be nothing less than
a coronation of the RINO Emperor, and his
Death Panels and RomneyCARE/ObamaCARE,
over the carcasses of the Tea Party and conservatives.

Agree.

I have lost all respect for Ron Paul over this. He has a monstrous ego and is intent on causing harm. So glad he’s not running again and perhaps will just go away.

Most of his most fervent supporters are very young, very naive, and well-meaning. They will likely become good voters if they ever learn to think for themselves. This year, they’re brainwashed idol worshippers being used by an old man who should be ashamed of himself.

from the article:

“The second rules change would front load winner takes all primaries. Grassroots conservatives point to both Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum as reasons to stop this rule. Had there been front loaded winner takes all primaries, neither the Gingrich nor the Santorum campaigns would have been able to get any traction.

“This is going to be a fight on the floor if they don’t back down. They have too much pride to back down and we’re going to humble them,” said one delegate to the convention.

Another tells me, “They’ve gotten social conservatives comfortable with the platform and now that they’re placated [Team Romney] is going to undercut them with this change.”

Speaking to one person familiar with the rules changes who supports them, I’m told a number of people support the changes because they see the current rules as efforts by Michael Steel to “liven up” the process, but all it did was run up the cost and drag it out. “Are we really going to keep the status quo because the guy who brought the convention to hurricane country in hurricane season thought they were a good idea?” the delegate asked.

The Rules Committee will meet at 2:00 p.m. today in Tampa to consider the rules changes. If they make it through the committee, delegates are telling me they promise a huge floor fight and there’s no guarantee Team Romney will get its way given the current make up of the delegates in Tampa.***

So, they gave partially on the first issue, but didn’t get close to a compromise on the other 2.

Just like the Rino Media...report a compromise but have it be only a small piece of the truth

If 3/4 of the RBC agrees on a rules change, what more do you want? Why should a 25% minority hijack the whole system?

It sure as hell is obvious to me. That is why they want Akin out of the Missouri race as he is too conservative for the like of Mittens and Rove.

That does make sense. When I first heard about it I thought it was kind of snarky on Romney's part, but if Romney was really going after the Tea Party types he never would have selected Ryan.

Ron Paul should never have been presented as a GOP candidate in the first place. He muddied the waters enormously, is still up to his mischief, and I think did conservatives a true disservice.

Furthermore, he gave legitimate ammunition to people who want to make this change, which will go way beyond him.

The GOPE just doesn’t want to wipe out the Paulbots but Tea Party and grassroots too......in fact this has less to do with Paulbots and more to do with the influence of the Tea Party in 2016 and beyond. Romney, Jeb and Rubio (fake Tea Partier) desires to clear out all opposition

these rules would have long-term unintended consequences

Only the naive believe they are unintended.

The first rule authorized the candidate to pick his own delegates, the 2nd enabled the candidate to set all the rules in secret with the power brokers, and the 3rd enabled the candidate to prevent future challenges.

Now, you tell me what rules 2 and 3 have to do with Ron Paul?
