General Motors will temporarily close the Detroit-area plant that makes the Chevrolet Volt next month to control inventory and prepare to make a new model.
Spokesman Bill Grotz says the factory will be off-line to match supply with demand and prepare to build the 2014 Chevrolet Impala. He wouldn't say how long.
Grotz says GM is happy with its supply of electric Volts. The plant also makes Chevrolet Malibus.

Offline to “match supply with demand”?
What a nice way of saying “nobody is buying them so we gotta stop making them”
And yet GM is so ALIVE thanks to Odipshit
“The plant also makes Chevrolet Malibus”
I believe they just recalled a ton of Malibus which included the new fleet of cop cars in Gwinnett County.
Don’t I own part of this company now?
When the wings fall off the plane, you jump out. You don’t throttle up!
What IS the shelf life of a Volt battery, anyway? They’ll probably expire in early November.
Notice how they didn't say, "we're happy with our Volt sales...?"
What do they take people for, idiots? The over-priced piece of crap isn't selling, so they've got plenty on-hand. Hence, of course they're happy with the supply of them! There's probably enough supply to last the next several generations at the rate they're selling.
My husband’s company, which shall remain nameless—hmm...supplied him with a Chevy Volt for his company car. I can’t stand even getting in the darn thing...it makes me sick, just about it. You wouldn’t believe all the looks we get while driving in it...it makes me feel so uncomfortable GRRRR -
I have an advance picture of the two prototypes.
Even more 'green' than the volt.
They should scrap this Volt POS and build one that uses CNG instead of coal.
” Grotz says GM is happy with its supply of electric Volts. “
Well, all they need is 160 of them. Should I bring up the 2 BILLION R & D/Marketing chargeoff ?
Honda has a Civic that uses CNG:
Only major car company that does. And yes, you can buy one here.
I was going to comment about the spin in the wording, but so many astute Freepers beat me to it.
Freepers, you rock!
It’s nice to hang out here with people who have their eyes open and brains engaged.
If they suspend production, how will Obammy buy a new one when he leaves office as he “promised”?
New model? They can’t even sell the current model. Wake up GM!
Oh, what’s that? The new model will be like the current model except it will cost $20,000 less and the battery will be guaranteed for 200,000 miles? Oh.
” The new model will be like the current model except it will cost $20,000 less and the battery will be guaranteed for 200,000 miles? Oh.”
Wake up, breakfast is ready : )
I thought I smelled bacon and coffee :)
NOTICE: This article says the ‘2014 Volt”.
The auto companies are producing their 2013 cars now-——NOT the 2014 models.
“Turnover” is when the auto companies send everyone except the machinists off for 2 or so weeks & they re-set all the assemply line with set ups for the new model years.
I worked at American Motors YEARS ago & only the office workers were working- because we were working on vendors bills for both year’s models.
This kind of shutdown is very normal.
What is NOT normal is to refer to a model year which is over 13 months away.
