Being Chris Matthews
http://dailycaller.com/2012/08/28/being-chris-matthews/ ^

Chris Matthews makes a very good living accusing other white people of being racist. It’s a strange occupation, but as much as it pains me to admit, Chris Matthews is neither crazy nor stupid. He is wrong a lot. He is cloying and irritating. He is certainly tedious. But he is not crazy or stupid, so he cannot be entirely dismissed.

Matthews suffers from an idealized version of history in which rebellious liberals spoke truth to power and ended the Vietnam War. These same heroic souls marched with Martin Luther King. They locked arms and stared down billy clubs and riot police across the South in non-violent unity until their example taught the nation how to love. Matthews’ liberals risked their lives to close the book on segregation. They set American women free from the patriarchal shackles of the homestead. They organized against greedy corporations until they paid union workers a living wage. With open hearts and generous spirits, Matthews’ liberals have been righting wrongs for 50 years, and, by God, they’re not done yet.

Something may be missing here that, since I am a little older than Matthews, is the product of my institutional memory.

I remember watching, in the late 60's and early 70's, many TV reports on the Irish in Boston darn near rioting against school integration. And, I sometimes wonder whether Matthews isn't going overboard in trying to show he isn't one of those Irish.

Chris was once a very heavy drinker, and then he stopped (at the insistence of his wife).

His recent behavior is consistent with having returned to drinking heavily.

The anger and illogical behavior are the hallmarks of such.

The two guys filling in for Glenn Beck are trying to get Chrissy declared the stupidest person ever to walk the face of the earth. I would second their effort.

Some insist that they’re patriotic, but they’re always against our wars, our foreign policy.

Liberals love wars their own kind start. Like the war in Kosovo, when we bombed our former orthodox Christian allies on behalf of muslim illegal aliens. Then their definition of patriotism suddenly conforms to Archie Bunker's.

Chris Matthews is Irish, and he DRINKS?

Did not his parochial school teachers explain to him the evils of hard liquor? I though the teaching nuns were pretty good at drilling in those kinds of lessons.

But the training did not take on Michael Moore, either.

Liberal boomers like Chris Matthews are an odd bunch. They were kids during the sixties and most were spectators to the civil rights movement. Few were called to serve their country in Vietnam. Even fewer answered the call. Still, they like to dress themselves in the scars of wounds suffered by others.

Good point. Call it vicarious virtue. Chris's generation didn't have the Depression or World War II and just missed active participation in the Civil Rights Movement. Chris could have gone to Vietnam or protested against it, but didn't to either. To speak with the kind of authority he aspires to, he latches on to the civil rights struggle as something that legitimizes his ambitions.

Chris Matthews did go into the Peace Corps during the Vietnam War, so obviously he had a thing for the Kennedys. His Sunday network show had a historical moment towards the end of each broadcast where he'd talk about American history, which seemed to begin in 1960 and peter out about 1974. Not a man of wide perspectives or long views is our Christopher.

Your comment insinuates that Michael Moore is Irish. Take it back. Lie if you have to. The Irish don't deserve to be treated in such a disgraceful manner. For God's sake, recant. PS-I'm Irish. I'm great at drinking.

I have a friend who knows several people in the Matthews’ social circle where it is well known that his wife made a rule that he has to sit down to pee because he soils the floor.

...Chris Matthews is neither crazy nor stupid.

Who's Chris Matthews and why should we care? *rhetorical*

Seriously, I gave up on TV years ago; so frankly, I always dismiss Chris Matthews and his ilk. And I dismiss them because they ARE crazed with a insane ideology. Still, I admit I had to laugh when I saw Newt Gingrich verbally b*tch-slap him on YouTube by throwing the racist card back at his face.

Matthews suffers from an idealized version of history...

In which the Democratic Party was formed to put an end to slavery

In which the Democratic Party overrode Republican opposition, and unanimously supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964

In which Republicans enacted Jim Crow Laws in the deep South, over strenuous Democratic opposition

In which the Democrats voted to censure the only remaining KKK member in the Senate

I think Mathews (like many others) have been in Washington for far too long. They live in a bubble and just sit there smugly knowing they are the best and brightest and anyone who would dare to disagree with them must be either stupid or have some evil motive.

They are the least capable and least informed people in this country because they really don't live in this country. They don't know it and can't beging to comprehend it.

Washington is in another reality from the rest of the United States.

Chissy is like soooooooo many libtards I know. They live, vicariously, though the past....thinking that THEY, somehow, make a “difference” in society and this nation....’specially in the 60’s.

I’ve been around these peeps. I know. the are OBNOXIOUS!!!!

Bet they can pull out their vinyl....and brag about where they were “during the time this song was popular”. Incredibly CHILDISH. Like they are comparing themselves as “WW2 heroes”.....while dodging the frikkin’ draft.
