Unions blast California public pension reform plan
SacBee: The State Worker ^ | 8/28/12 | Jon Ortiz

Labor unions wasted no time bashing the pension reform unveiled by Gov. Jerry Brown this morning as a unilaterally-imposed political exercise that needlessly guts state and local public employees' retirement for hundreds of thousands of workers.

"This is far more than 'low hanging fruit,'" said Dave Low, chairman of union coalition Californians for Retirement Security in statement issued while Brown was still holding a pension press conference in Los Angeles just before noon. "This is the fruit, the branch, the tree trunk, and the roots."

What particularly rankles labor leaders, however, was that none of this was bargained.

"When you get called in (to a meeting) and told, 'This is what we're going to do,' that's not negotiating," said Terry Brennan, a lobbyist for Service Employees International Union California.

A legislative joint committee is expected to release official pension reform language later today, but Brown's office put out a summary of the plan this morning.

The deal struck by Brown and Democrats in the Legislature would hit most current employees with higher pension contributions by mandating that they pay half the normal cost of their retirement benefits. Government agencies could bargain the higher payments but if they don't reach agreement after five years, the higher rate could be imposed.

Well, that's what happens when you vote 100% for a single party and they take over the whole apparatus of government - somehow, they no longer feel any need to "bargain" with the serfs.

You can always get a lesson in how to generate overheated turgid hyperbole by tuning in to a union boss when his gravy train ticket runs out of places to punch.

But the unions will never vote for a Republican so the Dems know they are safe.

I will believe it when it happens. Otherwise, it’s smoke and mirrors.

Dave Low is a prick and a blood sucker. I would take a reduction in my military pension if the rest of the government were taking a similar hit.

I predicted when Brown was elected that the unions might regret it. Yes he’s a lib, but he generally does what he says he will and doesn’t care if he steps on some toes on his own side.

If only they would cut the California defense budget before cutting the pension benefits of our wonderful government employees ...

oh wait ... California doesn't have a defense budget ... and if the Feds cut the defense budget that would further tank the California economy and lower tax receipts...

What to do? What to do?

political exercise that needlessly guts state and local public employees' retirement

NEEDLESSLY GUTS...and that's in the first line, entirely the journalist's "unbiased" intro to the subject.

If we had a Mainstream Media that actually produced objective news, I think the public would be much farther to the right.
