3 cited, 1 arrested in immigration advocates' demonstration

KNOXVILLE — A civil-disobedience demonstration over local immigration policing resulted in three people being cited for obstructing a roadway; they were then released.

A fourth person was arrested for having no identification.

A group of about 50 protesters this afternoon blocked Gay Street adjacent to the City County Building, north of the Gay Street Bridge.

One large sign read, "Racism hurts," and evoked Knox County Sheriff Jimmy "J.J." Jones' name.

The protesters spanned sidewalk to sidewalk, blocking the intersection at Gay Street and Hill Avenue. Vehicles couldn't pass.

The protesters said they are challenging anti-immigrant policies and racial profiling.

Specifically, the demonstration aimed to call attention to the Knox County Sheriff's Office's application to the federal 287(g) Immigration and Customs Enforcement program, which trains and authorizes local law-enforcement officers to enforce federal immigration laws.

Local protesters were joined by several members of a cross-country campaign, No Papers No Fear Ride for Justice, which began last month in Arizona and is traveling through the Southwest and Southeast en route to next week's Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

I myself was once commanded to produce ID, while walking down the street in my own neighborhood minding my own business. I complied but have always wondered what would have happened had I not.

n the situation in K'ville. three were cited for obstructing. The 4th was arrested for refusing to produce ID. I did not know that was a crime. Has it always been a crime?

I put it down to a typically lazy reporter’s poor use of English. If you are at a rally supporting illegal aliens, a rally that is blocking a street, a policeman might ask if you are in the country legally or not. The easy test would be to produce ID. This is not just Joe American walking down a sidewalk and being asked to produce his papers. It was a rally self-proclaimed to be by and for illegal aliens.

There are lots of twists and turns on “must produce identification”, in both state laws and federal precedent.

Please do they think the police are suppose to stop enforcing the laws ? Gee, we sure would not want an illegal driving without license /insurance to be pulled over, this by all means will lessen trust between illegal and police.These illegals just want the same corrupt system of gov that Mexico has, where winks and nods and bribes make complying with the laws all go away.
