Bolivian police on Tuesday confiscated two tons of uranium that was being stored at a building in central La Paz located near the U.S. and Spanish embassies......
Police pounced when they learned the people in possession of the uranium planned to meet Tuesday with a potential buyer.....

Probably harmless, but makes for a great media headline. I doubt two tons would yield much U235 after enrichment. I believe it takes A LOT.
I blame Obama.
Would make a great flak shield.......
Was it hidden in a shipment of cocaine?
There are many news stories dating back to 1992, of black market uranium deals. Not sure what to make of it.
I get my uranium ore from Amazon
Natural uranium is about 0.7% U235. Thus two tons would contain about 14 kg.
Thanks for the link. I have plenty of uranium ore, but am about to run out of unicorn meat...
That would be about enough.
Whew!, at least it wasn’t marijuana
Stop the presses, this story is getting out of hand. Fox has much of it wrong.
What was confiscated was burlap bags of rocks intended for a Chilean buyer. The rocks contain potential uranium ore for refining. The rocks were to be assayed to see if the uranium content justified mining and yellow cake refining.
Uranium ore is known to be in Cotaje District between Huari in Oruro and Sevaruyo and along the Mulato River in Potosí.
Potosi had a uranium mining operation that closed 25 years ago but there will always be exploration for valuable ores.
We do know that Iran is looking for uranium ore in Bolivia.
You’d need about 4-5 times that much to make a crude Gun-type fission weapon?
They blew it. Should have waited until after Hugo Chavez arrived before they made the arrest.
Evo Morales wants to sell us some yellow dirt at extremely inflated prices?
In this case, it matters that it was in bags made of jute and nylon. Jute is an inferior fiber, but its production is internationally subsidized in Bangladesh, since the land consumed in its production could also be used for food plants, and they don’t want the competition. But a combined weave of jute and nylon indicates greater technology and cost.
Top four jute producers (tons) Note: there are no major jute producers in central or South America.
People’s Republic of China 40,000
Very interesting info, thank you for that. As the story is written it seems very sinister, but your info disproves that. Sounded like enough to create a threat on the US streets, but if it is unrefined ore then we are probably getting a bigger dose from a chest xray.
The only problem with your statement is that the picture on the site the container says enriched....to 2 tons of enriched Uranium???? Sounds like a problem to me unless the picture does not go with the story and they do not say that.
FWIW: “The core of Little Boy contained 64 kg of uranium, of which 50 kg was enriched to 88%, and the remaining 14 kg at 50%, resulting in an average enrichment of 79.68%.” (wiki)
With today’s knowledge you’d probably be able to build a working device with less.
Wasn’t sure if Jute was an accurate identification or not.
Was figuring it was just a cover to conceal the real contents, which now appear to be just “hot rocks”
About 26 kilos ought to be enough for one gun type bomb, you'd need polonium to make a "spark plug".
I've never made a nuclear bomb or anything, but I'd assume that isn't a trivial amount of enriched Uranium. Then again, I understand that the enrichment process isn't the easiest thing in the world to do.
