HOLLYWOOD PARK, Texas A South Texas mayor has been found dead after apparently being attacked by a 500-pound donkey on his ranch.
The Atascosa County Sheriffs Office said Wednesday that the death of Hollywood Park Mayor William Bill Bohlke appears to be an accident. Bohlke was 65.

Mayor was a Republican?
Those donkeys are great for keeping livestock safe.
Killed by a donkey? The mayor must have been a republican.
May he rest in peace.
Accident my Ass !
It was manslaughter at best...
What’s the next headline, “Democratic mayor killed by 8,000-lb elephant” . . . ?
Donkeys are a lot smarter than people generally give them credit.
Donkeys are a lot smarter than people generally.......
a donkey can kick any moose ass.
Ok I don’t get it, how exactly does a Donkey keep livestock safe, please explain.
Donkeys will go after and kill coyotes, and even mountain lions.
They are tougher than they look.
Nah! The best we can hope for is “8000 Pound Elephant Takes A Dump On Wasserman-Schultz”.
Hooves and teeth and sheer determination. There is a video floating around of a donkey swinging a mountain lion around by it's tail.
May-December romance gone bad?
And it is amazing how quickly, hard and accurately they can kick. I learned a long time ago to walk out of range when passing behind a donkey (or horse).
The first donkey I bought tried his best to kill a group of steers, the only
Way they kept away from him was to get to the middle of a pond and
I have had good luck with later donkeys
Teeth and hooves will easily kill anything 200 lbs or less that walks the earth.
“There is no love lost between the Equidae and Canidae families. Donkeys, especially jennies, are very protective of animals they graze with and will run at, chase, stomp, kick and even kill any canine they encounter. They are also used to guard cattle from jaguars in Belize.”
Smarter than horses by far. That is where the mule gets his brains.
Atascosa County is a major player in the recent oil/gas boom going on in S. Texas.
These animals can see behind them, why they put binders on horses
I got kicked by a Charlois about ten yrs ago and got two screws in
My leg as a result.
Ya gotta be careful getting behind a animal
Donkeys hate coyotes, donkeys hate predators in general. A 500# would be a load for those predators that seek an easy meal.
My FIL raised miniature donkeys and they were a handful to deal with, especially the jacks. They can kick sideways, have a really nasty bite and you can NOT sneak up anywhere close to them. They can and do fight with dogs that got into the pasture and it was always the dog being chased by the jack that we had to rescue.
Here in Texas, if you see a field with cows in it, you are very likely to see a donkey in with them for protection.
Was the animal named Nadler?
Any critters coming on the property not suppose to be there; the donkey will kick the hell out of them possibly resulting in death. A lot of ranchers over the years have used them to protect their stock. I never want to be on the end of that kind of kick. Not sure if the donkeys can kick sideways like horses can.
So some of them can kick sideways like horses. Wasn’t sure.

Seems he got his priorities wrong. :)
“There is a video floating around of a donkey swinging a mountain lion around by it’s tail.”
Found pictures with the story, amazing! Notices the dogs siting and watching.
Horse doesn’t even miss a stide. Dog sees stars.
They will also dance a fandango on a rattle-snake's head and turn one into a mudhole.
Bohlke, who was in his 60s, served in the Air Force for 20 years before retiring in 1990. He was a B-52 instructor pilot and squadron commander and served in the Vietnam War. He earned 10 air medals and three Distinguished Flying Crosses.
Lot of folks with horses keep a donkey in their pasture for the same reason.
My friend’s donkey let the goat out of its stall, killed it and threw it in a drainage ditch. They are smart and can be really mean.
“appears to be an accident”
It was premeditated but they’ll never prove it he covered up his tracks and lawyered up.
Around here, donkeys are kept to watch livestock. They will absolutely KILL coyote and wildcats. We can’t have one as our dogs are too curious and might try to make friends with it. What a terrible way to die.
No, donkeys are intelligent.
May he RIP
The same way one just killed the mayor. They’re pretty territorial and don’t tend to run away from trouble they can kick into submission instead.
I find it interesting that Mayor Bohlke is described as a “South Texas” mayor. Hollywood Park is an “enclave” of San Antonio on the north side of town by the 281/1604 interchange. Atascosa County is south of San Antonio, home to the Poteet Strawberry Festival. I wonder if the copy writer saw Atascosa County (where the late mayor owned property) and automatically assigned the term “South Texas,” since that descriptor is rarely given to areas north of San Antonio.
Either way, sad news, and not a good way to go.
