TAMPA, August 29, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – Sarah Palin has said a third party may emerge if the Republican Party’s leaders abandon conservative principles.
Asked if the GOP’s increasing fractiousness may lead to a new party taking its place, Palin replied, “If history is an indication it is a possibility – if the Republicans don’t remember what the planks in the platform represent.”
“Look what happened in the mid-1800’s. The Whig Party went away and the Republican Party surfaced, because the electorate got sick and tired of the party fighting for power and not doing the will of the people,” Palin said on Fox News.
Palin’s words echo those made by the founder of a conservative third party, Howard Phillips of the Constitution Party.
“The Republican Party is going to go the way of the Whigs in the 1850s,” said Phillips, who served as the first presidential candidate of what was then known as the U.S. Taxpayers Party, in his 1992 acceptance speech. “It will die the death of a double-minded man – who talks one way but lives in conflict with that which he professes to believe.”
Phillips, who headed the Office of Economic Opportunity during the Nixon administration, frequently likened the modern GOP’s refusal to take a definitive stand protecting all unborn children to the Whig Party’s refusal to oppose slavery – a dodge that led to its implosion and the birth of the Republican Party.
The Constitution Party platform opposes abortion under all circumstances.
The former Alaska governor has in the past bypassed a liberal Republican in favor of a more conservative, third party challenger. In 2009, Palin endorsed Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman over pro-choice Republican Dede Scozzafava for a congressional race in New York.
Democratic operatives also claimed Palin supported Pat Buchanan‘s third party presidential candidacy in 2000, because she wore a Buchanan button as she welcomed him during a visit to Wasilla. In fact, she served on Steve Forbes’ campaign that year.
However, in 1995 and 2000 Palin’s husband, Todd, registered as a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, which has endorsed the Constitution Party presidential candidate since 1996.
Palin is not alone in her ominous message to the Republican elite. Phyllis Schlafly said House Speaker John Boehner was “making a mistake” when he said “I’ve never read” a party platform, then specifically noted his exceptions to protecting some classes of the unborn. “It’s a very grassroots document that I think the politicians ought to listen to,” she said.
A number of other Republicans - including former Congressman Tom Tancredo, Alan Keyes, and U.S. Senator Bob Smith - have cast their lots with the Constitution Party since 2000, only to leave shortly afterwards. The party’s 2012 presidential candidate is former Republican Congressman Virgil Goode of Virginia.
Palin, the Republican party’s 2008 vice presidential nominee, was not publicly invited to speak at the Republican National Convention. John McCain will address the convention tonight.

If things don’t correct themsleves in the next 2-3 years, it is a gamble worth taking. It’d be so simple to slam both existing parties on every issue.

I Lurk.. Many things today had me wish to express opinions. On this, should we not double down on our efforts within the R party? Uphill battle, yes.. We support the existing partners (they will w/o a doubt need support) we pick the seats we need. A third party makes for an easy target.. “All in the party are “Palinized” or what I’ve used for years “Quayled”.. Support a voice in the party??? The Dems will love this idea of a split, as will the RINO’s.
I still think the Michigan rout in the Michigan convention that removed the number 1 Romney operative (Saul Anuzis) played a big pat in the GOPe behavior yesterday. Anuzis is a hardcore progressive scumbag who voted for the after the primary rule change that took the Michigan tie and gave it to Romney. He got in trouble a year or so back for pimping the national popular vote using official GOP stationary and just turned up today pimping green jobs.

The GOP elite should always fear the emergence of an independent conservative party. It is the only real leverage conservatives have as long as the GOPussys are in charge.
It is when they DON’T fear a third party that they have the conservatives hostage.
Whatever one might think of the most prominent individuals at this years convention: Romney of Ma, Ryan of Wi, Priebus of Wi, Christie of NJ, Boehner of Oh, and others, none of them are from a reliably Republican state.
Of the states that can truly be called “red states”, we see very little representation in the key positions of this year’s Republican party and convention.
Conservatives have been pushed to the side in many ways, and if the Rinos in charge, Rinos from states that rarely vote Republican, if they stray too far, that might set off a serious initiative to form a third party among conservatives from states which actually reliably vote for Republicans.
They are definitely taking the true base of the party for granted, if not worse.

The media’s going to attach baggage to you no matter what you call yourself. Just look at the Tea Party. No point in trying to play by their rules and run away from who you are. If the media defines you, you define yourself and them instead.
I say go with the Tea Party. Name recognition is a HUGE factor in marketing yourselves. The Tea Party, unlike other parties, has that. An unrecognizable name is far harder to succeed with than a name that might have a negative connotation, but is known.
And I say have a party platform and any candidate who doesn’t stick to it gets their funding cut off.

I’d not thought that through. Interesting. I am still inclined to see more the old malignancies of Prescott Bush, George Romney and the whole Rockefeller wing rising from the crypt in new iterations, rather than more recent degradation from ‘blue dog’ types. Certainly it is and may prove to be a fruitful marriage for the advancement of progressive agendas and policies. Damned revenants.

I think what happened was G.W. Bush went so far to the left on spending and entitlements under Rove’s direction to presumably get more votes (and increase Rove’s status, wealth and power as a consultant), that it forced the Democrats to go even further left, push for Obamacare and this great expansion of the welfare state. Now the Republicans simply don’t even have to go back to the right to distinguish themselves from the Democrats. They can stay center-left, and they still look like a distinct alternative compared to the Commie-crats.
As for why we couldn’t win a presidential primary even though we’ve been doing great in Congressional primaries, I don’t know. Why wasn’t there a bunch of real conservative money going into a real conservative candidate for president? Do real conservatives not have the money, only wealthy urban elite RINOs from those blue cancerous sores on the map known as big cities? Because those people will always despise the “God and guns” crowd for deep cultural reasons that transcend politics. And they associate conservatives with the South and the “God and guns” crowd, call them “extremists” and hate them.

Why isn’t anyone saying that a viable third party simply needs to be called the Conservative Party, since that’s what it already is?
Some of the little splinters like the Constitution Party (I mean no disrespect to them) would come on board.
Or maybe I’m just into wishful thinking.
