Laws are great, but until public opinion shifts, the laws are not going to reflect a truly anti-abortion stance. I am, however, optimistic. Modern ultrasound technology has enabled people to see incredibly detailed pictures of the unborn child, and it is these images that will convince people that what is being aborted is truly a human being and worthy of the law’s protection. Public opinion will eventually shift. In fact, I believe it’s in the process of shifting even now.
You make a great point about laws versus opinion, and this is where the pro life movement has really fallen down badly for the most part IMO. I say that as someone who is pro life. The ultra sound is a huge weapon in this fight.
I don’t think it makes any sense to talk morality and The Bible to folks who don’t have morality or believe in the Bible. I also resent the notion that there are merely issues of morality and issues of money, as if there are no issues of basic liberty. But that’s another battle with the single issue folks.
However, an ultrasound picture of a baby, even in the first trimester, really brings home in a scientific and emotional way what these procedures really are. This is how we win this war. Not by assuming that every office from dog catcher through President must be decided on the political issue.
