Texas voter ID law struck down
Washington Post ^ | August 30, 2012 | Sari Horwitz and Del Quentin Wilber

A federal court on Thursday blocked a controversial new voter ID law in Texas, ruling that the state failed to show that the law would not harm the voting rights of minorities.

The three-judge panel in the historic case said that evidence also showed that costs of obtaining a voter ID would fall most heavily on poor African Americans and Hispanics in Texas.

Evidence submitted by Texas to prove that its law did not discriminate was “unpersuasive, invalid, or both,” wrote David. S. Tatel, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, in the panel’s 56-page opinion.

The ruling will likely have political implications in the coming elections...

Gun ownership and voting are both rights. One you must show ID, background check and some states limit the type of guns available nationally that I can buy. Any gun available for purchase must meet stringent federal and state laws before it is allowed on the market. Voting on the other hand means a Hispanic man can show up as Martha Steinberg, cast his vote for a candidate that does not meet the definition of Natural Born Citizen (both parents US citizen and born in US). Makes me wonder why establishment wants more foreigners and loosen the standard for candidates to include sub foreign ones? Maybe the one percent of our nation realize they can no longer rely and control the 99 percent in this country and need foreign reinforcements to stay in power.

If Obama & Holder can ignore the law..just issuing bogus "edicts" re: immigration, enforcement of defense of marriage, ignore Fed Judge in NO...etc..

...My question then would be:

.. why not just ignore the "ruling",...order the Texas ID law valid in Texas and dare the Feds to enforce the ruling by force.

Seriously, what would the feds do? Would they provoke a "war" with Texas?..try to capture Greg Abbott & Gov Perry?

I want the confrontation....I would risk jail to have the confrontation as a sovereign citizen of the State of Texas...

You should look at Romney’s record of appointing judges and the board who recommended judges in Mass. before calling this bull.

This will be decided at the Supreme court....not that that would change anything with John Roberts there!

“I simply cannot say what I think should happen with these judges and their ilk. All I can say is that if it happens, I’d dance a jig....”

Better still find out where they are buried and go piss on their graves.

Bless you: Too many pages for me!
Lots of words means little thought in rulings.

2 noxious Dem judges and a Bush judge who has always been liberal.

A question to anyone well versed in the Constitution.

How come the question of Texas voting law is decided by a Federal Court? Isn’t the way a the elections are organized in the different states state issues?

The President is not elected in a direct election but by electors from the different states. Isn’t it up to each and every state to decide how the electors are chosen?

Well, I was being polite, of course....However, I think that urine has better uses than wasting it on the grave of a liberal.

Don’t worry. The Texas AG IS raging and will be appealing this stupid, politically-motivated decision to the Supreme Court, which has found other similar laws perfectly constitutional.

Unfortunately, the effects of this decision probably won’t be stopped by November 6.

So, I take it these poor minorities aren't getting married, attending school, buying booze, ALL of which require an ID?

They're apparently not eating anything either, as the rationale was about "cost."

Can this be appealed before November 6th?

I don't think so, but a stay may be issued on the Commie Court's decision.

One of the things that true Patriots need to do is get involved as poll watchers with TrueTheVote. It’s appalling what corruption this organization has uncovered.

From the article:
"Texas is the largest state covered by Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which requires federal approval or “preclearance” of any voting changes in states that have a history of discrimination. Because of Texas’s discrimination history, the voter ID law signed last year by its Republican governor, Rick Perry, had to be cleared by the Justice Department. The department blocked the law in March, saying it would endanger minority voting rights. Texas sued the department, leading to a week-long trial in July."

Here's some more background on the infamous Section 5:

In 1982, Congress extended Section 5 for 25 years, but no new Section 5 coverage formula was adopted. It did, however, modify the procedure for a jurisdiction to terminate coverage under the special provisions.

In 2006, Congress extended the requirements Section 5 for an additional 25 years.

http://www.justice.gov/crt/about/vot/sec_5/about.php

The pubbies were too scared of the racist tag back in 2006 to kill the law when they had a chance so this is where we are today at the mercy of the Obama/Holder Justice Dept.

It was the People’s Republic of Massivetwoshits. Who do you think controlled things there? Saying this shit about Romney is like blaming a running back for getting his uniform dirty. It’s to be filed under DUHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Gun ownership and voting are both rights.

I've long said the requirements for buying and owning a gun should be as stringent as those for voting.
