From 2002 until 2008 our church distributed Thanksgiving baskets in Anacostia (east D.C and the highest crime area). The first couple of years it was 100% black. There were loads of boarded-up buildings, every surface was tagged and gangbangers glared sullenly from the shadows or lay crashed in the alleys. We were sternly warned by the locals to be across the river by dinnertime.
It was a hellhole.
But over a half-decade, there was quiet change. The empty row homes near the river were replaced by new condo highrises. Cafes and coffee shops opened up on the the corners and the 'bangers and taggers receded into the shadows. It wasn't Chevy Chase Village, but you didn't have to worry about getting out before dark anymore. And do you know the locals thought of it?
They HATED it. Even the local church that we were partnering with was up in arms about "gentrification". People were complaining because there were fewer "beautiful black faces" and fewer "black-owned businesses." (The latter were mostly ratty cigarette-beer-and-lottery ticket walkups.) It was pretty revealing.

Remember last April, John Derbyshire’s firing from National Review? For writing, among other things:

Firstly, there is one set of rules for the slavery party (the Democrats) and another set of rules for the party of the (so-called) Great Emancipator.
Secondly, Mr. Derbyshire: You were a diamond in a goat’s (NR) butt-hole. You’re better off now, I suspect and hope.
I worked in the DC warzone of Anacostia in 1991, Crissy wouldn’t last 2 minutes there.

PS Also, and importantly, as usual (like Akin) his colleagues at National Review, and Republicans generally, quickly signed-on and beat the mau mau drums themselves and condemned Derbyshire and tossed him under the bus, Obama-like, for writing about what Democrats like Chris Matthews actually do, as opposed to what they say.
But he is planning to move to DC as soon as Alec Baldwin goes to France.

1. He doesn’t drive, he is driven in a limo with blacked out widows.
2. He comes down Wisconsin Ave past Sachs, Tiffany’s and Sidwell Friends then left on Massachusetts Ave (aka Embassy Row). By the time he gets to North Capitol he is in front of the recently remodelled Union Station. Not a single housing project along the way.
