The Army psychiatrist accused of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting told the military judge his Muslim faith requires him to wear a beard, marking the first time Maj. Nidal Hasan has made a statement in court.
"Your honor, in the name of almighty Allah, I am a Muslim," Hasan said. "I believe that my religion requires me to wear a beard."
Hasan made the statement after the presiding judge, Col. Gregory Gross, asked why he was still in contempt of court -- in other words, why Hasan hadn't shaved his beard, which is against Army regulations.
"I am not trying to disrespect your authority as a military a judge. And I am not trying to disrupt the proceedings or the decorum of the court," he said. "When I stand before God I am individually responsible for my actions."
Gross has threatened to have Hasan forcibly shaved, previously citing the regulations and the right to ensure "that a military trial proceeds without a distracting and disruptive sideshow."
Hasan was found in contempt of court again Thursday, fined $1,000 and sent from the court to a trailer where Hasan watched the rest of the proceedings via closed circuit TV.
A hearing has been scheduled for September 6, to discuss whether Hasan's religious claims would prevent him from being shaved.
Hasan's court martial was scheduled to start last week at Fort Hood, in Killeen, Texas, where he is accused of killing 13 people and wounding 32. The trial was delayed when Hasan's legal team petitioned the U.S. Court of Appeals to prevent Gross from ordering Hasan's facial hair shaved.
The Court of Appeals found that Hasan's petition was "premature" because Gross had not yet issued a definitive order. If an official order was given, the appeals court said, Hasan could file another petition.

It seems fair to judge him as to his beard before he killed people.
No, he did not have a beard when he committed all of those murders. This is just his latest stall tactic. It has been nearly three years now and he still hasn’t had to face justice. Heck, around here (Ft. Hood) we recently saw Nasir (sp? don’t care.) Abdo tried and convicted...and his attempted act of terrorism was just a year ago. Ugh, Hasan has denied his victims and the survivors of those he murdered justice for almost three years; meanwhile he is living rent-free in a safe prison and receiving better medical care than many people you know. All the beards in the world aren’t going to help him when he faces the good Lord.
It amazes me that we put up with this BS.

Hasan has, so we’re told, the use of his arms. Lots of paraplegics, many of them our brave wounded warriors, can do personal hygiene & live independently more or less.
So....why not sentence his sorry Muslim @ss to life at hard labor? He’ll be busted to private as well. Wheel him out into the prison yard, hand him a bricklayer’s hammer and tell him to get the h**l to work & make little rocks into smaller ones. If he refuses, leave him there in his wheelchair in the hot sun while his guard sits under a beach umbrella with a cooler full of cold drinks & a fan blowing.
Otherwise, lock him up in a skylight-only cell with his beloved Koran & no TV, no internet, no Muslim contacts, no nothing.
Unfortunately, this is the case with the other jihadi dirtbags like Moussaoui, Richard Byrd, Feisal Shahzad, etc. They’re not complaining because they believe Al-Qaeda will pull off the ultimate mass hostage taking & get them sprung. This keeps them going.
I take it back, then. Shave his beard with the cameras rolling, record his screams, then execute him in the most ignominious manner possible for a muzzie: death by hanging, since constricting the throat prevents the soul from escaping and it will get buried under pig parts along with his sorry @ss.
Only....PigSh*t Hasan is laughing up his sleeve since he knows the real reason for his delayed trial isn’t the brilliance of his defense team, but the Army chain of command’s enforced PC ignorance that disregarded all the warning signs he willingly left until he did his dastardly deed. When Hasan goes down, a lot of senior Army officers will be sweating bullets. Fifty caliber, that is.

No 72 virgins for you Major Nidal Hasan. Make sure Hasan’s family knows he's been gorging himself on pork (or not) and pack the body in pork left overs before delivery to them.

Why is there even a trial then. If he is “required” to wear a beard because of his “faith”, then he is also required to kill the infidels. He admits to being guilty in that case. Just hang him and have it done.

No mystery here election is not until November, no trial, nor embarrassing press. If Obama wins the trial will be over, if he loses, expect a Clintonian forgiveness move.
