What IS surprising is Fred Thompson favors it too.
When Gore says anything, the burden is on him to prove what he says is not moronic nonsense, otherwise it’s safe to assume whatever he has to say is not worth listening to. That said, anyone taking this suggestion of his seriously at all needs to, ask: does Al Gore (Idiot-TN), really know more about this than James Madison?

Of course they do. They know that most libs/lefties live in the bigger cities. They would like nothing better than for NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Dallas [not so much cowboyville, aka Ft. Worth], Los Angeles, etc., to decide elections.
If that ever happened, NH, VT, NM, and most of the other smaller or fly-over states would never be visited by a candidate running for president. Those candidates would only campaign in the larger cities.

The Founding Fathers were smart enough to know that popular elections can be very close and election stealing a very real possibility. The Electoral College brings certainty to a Presidential election. Imagine if the presidency is to be decided by a hand full of votes with endless recounts and court challenges. Look at the Franken versus Coleman race for Senate in Minnesota where the outcome of the election took almost two months to resolve and a few tens of ,likely fraudulent, gave Franken the US Senate seat.

Happened in Wa. After the third counting for governor, King county found 125 extra votes that got Gregoire the governorship. The first two counts favored the Republican Rossi.
Can the Electoral College call for the end of Al Gore?
The founders of this country knew what they were doing with the Electoral College. Otherwise, the liberal bastions and cesspool cities would elect Democrats until the cows come home, with no hope for flyover country.
Conservatives and conservatism need to find successful ways of winning, for the long-term, throughout ALL U.S. cities! If the electoral college is abolished, then it will, probably, be all U.S. cities who will end up determining all future POTUS!
Just remember to say “rugby” and “try”, rather than “football” and “touchdown”. ;-)

I recall specifically that Gore and company were praising the Founders for the wisdom of this system when polls at one point were suggesting the opposite was going to occur - that Bush would win the popular vote but Gore would win the election.
Most people who claim they don't support the Electoral College can't explain what it is or what its purpose is. They don't know that the President of the United States is just that - the President of the STATES - hence, why he is elected by the States. "United States" is not a singular entity - it is plural.
