Newt Gingrich on Thursday came to Todd Akins defense, calling the embattled Missouri Senate candidate honorable and sincere.
Speaking to POLITICOs Mike Allen at the Playbook Afternoon Snack event here, the former House speaker said the controversy surrounding Akins recent legitimate rape comments was a good example of why the power structure in Washington sometimes ought to take a deep breath.
Todd Akin made a mistake. Hes an honorable guy, hes a sincere guy. He said something stupid. There was a firestorm, Gingrich said.

My advice is for Akin to focus on McCaskill and her failures, and not be bitter, about the firestorm, he Akin had caused.
BTW, do the people on Akin's side, have a battle plan after September 25th, the deadline for Akin to drop out, when McCaskill unleashes the lions from her war chest.
Is Todd Akin ready for prime time? Will he focus on the GOP or the true threat Claire McCaskill?
This is good news for Akin if true. Newt Gingrich is Tea Party. McCaskill must be getting worried now IMHO.
What a great response by Newt after having to endure those idiotic murder comments by Tinky Winky Rove.
Everything Newt says is correct. The guy had what I call a “senior moment” and the rats have enough of them without being called out for it. Give this guy a break.
I believe he will come out of it and win. We need the win.
Thanks Newt! I sorta wished you supported him when the heat was on and the JERKS who were going over the top stupid with the situation would have heard from you. It is good to see you supporting him today. Akin for President 2016...Anybody who can withstand the stress and negativity that he did can EASILY withstand a Presidential run.
My advice is for Akin to focus on McCaskill and her failures, and not be bitter, about the firestorm, he Akin had caused.
Bull crap. He deserves to be bitter and when he is elected, he won’t have anyone he owes favors too. He did not cause the firestorm. The STUPID idiots who complained did. It would never had been noticed had the idiots on our side complaining. The Republicans are COMPLETELY at fault over this.
I see, you believe bitterness is an attribute, as Obama does.
See the movie 2016.
What kind of a liberal statement is that? Akin made a mistake. He admitted it. Bitterness is the trait of democrats. It was Akin's fault.
Now move on with this campaign or he WILL lose! McCaskill is the opposition. It's time to MAN UP and fight that opposition.
My prediction (FWIW): Akin beats McCaskill, hands-down. Even though he has less money to deploy, thanks to Rience Preibus (sp???) and friends. They folded like a cheap suitcase at the first sign of "trouble." So much for political courage, so much for fortitude in the defense of a great conservative candidate.
And Karl Rove's comments were sickening to me.... I used to LOVE that guy! Now I learn I must take him with a grain of salt....
Gingrich's former campaign manager, Rick Tyler, is working for the Akin campaign now as well.
See the movie 2016.
Already saw it. You are the worst one of all. The way you treated Akin is treason. I think you deserve to apologize directly to Akin!
"trouble"? Akin was troubling during that interview, especially about the question of rape and abortion, and everybody knows it.
Now the question is on who he blames for his(Akin's) mistake, the GOP or himself, and can he get over his bitterness of making a self inflicted wound or focus on Claire McCaskill.
Notice how Akin has kept his mouth shut he is up in the polls against McCaskill.
Wow, you sound like Stalin, making me apologize for something I didn't say.
Do you work for Rove????
A typical liberal. No wonder you are sucking up to Romney.
No I do not. I'm just a blue collar worker who gets sick of the pro-life lobby hubris, and BTW, I am pro-life, and thinks that Roe V. Wade was a travesty.
As you are sucking up to Obama/McCaskill.
I hope you will forgive me if I don’t believe you.
You are so demented. No Akin is going to win and then you are going to be in a corner crying your eyes out. You are part of the destroy Akin group. The GOPe picked Romney so he best do his work to get elected. I am one vote that is it.
Whatever, you must be a democrat, since you think that a blue collar worker like myself has no political mind.
I really don't care if you have the same mindset of Nancy Pelosi.
So you don’t forgive me then???
I will be happy with joy when McCaskill is out, the thing I am concerned about are persons like you, who hate the GOP more than the democrats, and that if Todd Akin listens to you more.
Why should I forgive you, when you don't believe(forgive) me.
So then I guess Rove is a Democrat too or is this how the GOPe speak about one of their own:
“In a closed-door fundraiser at the Republican National Convention, Karl Rove reportedly joked about the murder of Missouri GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin.
We should sink Todd Akin. If hes found mysteriously murdered, dont look for my whereabouts! joked Rove, according to a Businessweek report of the fundraiser.”

Yes Akin did give these little toadies the opportunity to shove him out, but, this was not the beginning, and his ‘pro-life’ stand is the least of what bugs and bothers these fiscal liberals.
Get over it, I guess you switched your vote to Dukakis in 88, when President Reagan made a joke about bombing the Soviet Union in 1985.
What Akin said was probably not the most articulate thing I have ever heard, but I have heard much worse from democRATS.
Why shouldn’t Akin not try to win this race?
So he should take responsibility and not have others on FR say he is not responsible for his words, as Uncle Chip.
You changed the subject rather quickly for a meek little blue collar worker. Is it acceptable in your book of ethics for someone to say this:
We should sink Todd Akin. If hes found mysteriously murdered, dont look for my whereabouts! joked Rove, according to a Businessweek report of the fundraiser.

Why aren’t you calling on Rove to resign???
See reply #29.
Now the question to you is why you hate Karl Rove more than Claire McCaskill.
What exactly Dallas do you mean 'take' responsibility. I do believe Akin spent a whole week apologizing for his words. Maybe you should practice what you preach. I can't wait for Rove to take responsibility for the havoc he has created across this nation. But what is he just one of those more special animals described in Animal Farm?
We in Missouri can vote in our own elections and if Akin can get his supporters to really support him with political life, cash, lots of it then Akin can really represent we citizens of Missouri. I think that is what the arrogant highhanded moderates fear more than anything else. An independent senator that cannot be bribed or bought that is an actual conservative....
No -- the question to you is why you and Karl Rove hate Akin more than you want to defeat Claire McCaskill???
So this is your defense of Karl Rove's joke about Akin????
Not even a call for him to apologize???
You Rovists on this forum are too much.
Please, Akin took a day to half-heartedly to "apologize" for his remarks, and the he flew to Tampa to listen to his echo chamber.
BTW, have you noticed that since Todd Akin has kept his mouth shut, he is now equal in the polls.
All he has to do is keep his mouth shut, but his hubris won't let him.
Who caused this firestorm, Todd Akin or Karl Rove.
Never mind, you will say something like that there was a gun behind the scene being held by Karl Rove towards Todd Akin, when Todd Akin made his stupid remarks.
So, I'm supposed to accept that a man of sterling character and rock-solid conservative principles is to be thrown under the bus, because he had a mild case of "foot in the mouth disease?"
Nobody on earth with the possible exception of that ninny, Barbara Boxer, would see in Akin's remarks any indication that he was trying to "legitimize" rape. Or to see that it is anything but a criminal act, a horrific crime perpetrated mainly against women.
But Akin's question Who should pay the price for the crime? The perpetrator of it, or the innocent pre-born child? is worth thinking about.
The GOP-E (whatever that is) wants him "dead" because Akin actually supports passionately the right to life; but it is inconvenient to their plans that a "social issue" like this should intrude on their carefully constructed plans for winning this election (including the Senate).
Whatta bunch of wussies!
I mean, I know they like to do things "by the numbers" (read: polls). But what about defending the principles which are clearly stated in the GOP platform, and the people who advance them like Akin?
My sense is Akin is taking the fight to McCaskill, not wasting time defending himself against the GOP establishment. He may be short on bucks, but I believe he will win this fight.
It seems to me the people of Missouri aren't a bunch of dithering morons who run for the hills anytime there is a fabricated "problem" like this.
The choice between Akin and McCaskill is certainly clear enough. She is nothing but a mouthpiece for the political Left trying to keep her job and her party in power. Akin is a man of substance and principle who clearly believes that the right to life is a gift of God, which is protected by our Constitution.
JMHO FWIW
It was an apology that played on TV for two weeks paid for by his own campaign funds. He put his money where his mouth is -- which is more than can be said for Rove and the GOPe.
BTW we would accept a "half-hearted" apology from Karl for his mouthy hubris about Akin. Are we going to get one???
Turn around and ask him.
Who made that inappropriate joke regarding Akin???
Tell your boss to suck it up and apologize. If he needs to learn how I'm sure that Akin can help him.
Yeah know Betty if you met me at a diner counter, and the conversation went into such things, as Todd Akin stated for the record, such as 'legitimate rape" and that the female reproductive system shuts down during rape, would you consider me a creep or a legitimate candidate for the US Senate.
Dallas are you in Dallas? Apparently you are isolated from real time and real events. Akin did go to Tampa, but he had ads running in my local media apologizing the whole week after he forgot who he was talking to.
Akin is not alone in suffering as you call it hubris, you seem to have more than enough for you and Akin put together....
Ditto everything you so well said!!!!! Foot-in-mouth’s a permanent condition for the dems, but who notices?
“When McCaskill unleashes the lions from her war chest”?.....She has cats on her chest?.....lots of animals in your comments.....lions and tigers and bears and sharks, oh my!
Good for Newt
I think Newt now sees that the attacks on Akin were merely because he was pro-Life Conservative...not for his comments
When is Karl Rove quitting Fox for his pro-murder comments?
Go Newt! Thanks for reminding me once again why I voted for you in Pennsylvania this year. Just don’t do any more awkward “two-for-one” speeches with Callista now.
Sounds like Tyler learned his lesson not to abandon conservatives when they’re down after quitting Newt’s campaign last summer and then returning in the fall during Newt’s resurgence.
I'm not against the imaginary GOP-e, I'm against the so-called GOP-e. And I don't particularly care what you call them.
