American racism is starting to remind me of American alcoholism. At the founding of the republic, in the days when beer was thought of as liquid bread and a healthy nutritional breakfast, Americans drank about three to four times as much as they do now. Today the United States has a lower per capita rate of alcohol consumption than almost any other developed nation, but it has more alcoholism support groups than any other developed nation around 164 groups per million people. France, which drinks about 50 percent more per capita than America, has one-twentieth the number of support groups. The French and Italians enjoy drinking, the English and Irish enjoy getting drunk, and Americans enjoy getting drunk on ever more absurd stigmatizatory excess. At Walmart they card you if you appear to be under what is it up to now? 43? 57? And the citizenry take this as a compliment: Well-preserved grandmothers return from failed attempts to purchase a bottle of wine with gay cries of, I was carded at Costco! Theyve made my weekend!
And so it goes with American racism: The less there is, the more extravagantly the racism-awareness lobby patrols its beat. The Walmart carding clerks of the media are ever more alert to those who appear to be racist. On MSNBC, Chris Matthews declared this week that Republicans use Chicago as a racist code word. Not to be outdone, his colleague Lawrence ODonnell pronounced golf a racist code word. When Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell observed that Obama was working to earn a spot on the PGA tour, ODonnell brilliantly perceived that subliminally associating Obama with golf is racist, because the word golf is subliminally associated with Tiger Woods, and the word Tiger is not so subliminally associated with cocktail waitress Jamie Grubbs, nightclub hostess Rachel Uchitel, lingerie model Jamie Jungers, former porn star Holly Sampson, etc., etc. So by using the word golf youre sending a racist dog-whistle that Obama is a sex addict who reverses over fire hydrants.
Obama has brought more racism to America — from the black end, by once more encouraging that crowd to blame their failures on whips and chains that fell still a hundred and fifty years ago.
The rest of this Mark Steyn column is excellent, as well. I read it earlier this evening. He delivers a hilarious, stinging rebuke better than anyone else out there!
There is, of course, no point whatsoever in upbraiding the media - once an honorable preofesssion, news reporting has become like pro wrestling: everyone knows it’s a fraud, but the mob play along.
Only America’s worst idiots take it seriously anymore; unfortunately, there are a great many such idiots.
where is my Mark Steyn ping?
So terrifically hilarious... and a cut so precise
These dopes don’t even get it!
Luv me some Steyn!
No longer should America lag other first world countries in alcohol consumption. I’ll not take this lying down. Just as soon as I get up, I’m going to consume some alcohol just so I can do my part. Some people don’t drink. I get that. But some people can afford to store large quantities of liquor whilst I cannot. The government ought to spread the alcohol around so that we don’t fall behind the other developed countries. I’m willing to take a couple barrels of J Daniels and a semi load of Boston Lager and will do my part to consume it in timely fashion. As Tickle says, “If you love your country, you gotta love moonshine”.

O’Donnell was just connecting the dots for the ignorant masses. sarc/
OMG! there's that 66 again!
Nails it. Thanks for posting.
As an aside, beer was drunk so heavily by our ancestors because the water supply often made us sick, literally to death. The alcohol in beer killed off many or all of the germs in the water it was fermented with.
Not to mention home brewed beer is practically a meal with all the particulate that settles at the bottom.
BipolarBob—We can kill two birds with one stone here by playing the Democrat Drinking Game. Every time a Republican is accused of racist (or any of the rest of us), take a nice swift swig from the nearest adult beverage. That should keep you suitably sloshed throughout the election season.
I’ve been wondering why I get these strange urges to start barking.
Using math and common sense re saying no to rat deficit spending to buy votes from minorities and illegals or terrible green tyranny is evil and racist.
Being a practicing Christian or Jew in today’s America, is a worse evil as well as being racist.
Telling the truth is now evil racism!
Last but not least, believing in personal responsibility is both evil, radical and racist.
NOW, yes. But was that so in the 1700’s? People then thought tomatos would kill you, never realizing that it was the pewter in the plates they ate them off of that was the problem.
It isn’t the alcohol in beer that kills the bacteria. It’s the boiling of the water that beer is made with that does it.
And a little more directly, and bluntly, by 1) publicly identifying with prowler and murderer-wannabe Trayvon Martin, 2) turning loose the New Black Panthers after their felony conviction for intimidating white voters, and 3) repeated racist statements disparaging white people as "bitter clingers" and so on -- even his own grandmother.
