Unions shrug at Democratic convention
By ROBIN BRAVENDER | 9/2/12 2:33 PM EDT
In recognition of the changes we have made in our political program, however, and our desire to engage in politics in a more effective and grass-roots way, this year we will not be making major monetary contributions to the convention or the host committee for events or activities around the convention, Trumka said in a letter last month to union officials. We wont be buying skyboxes, hosting events other than the Labor Delegates meeting or bringing a big staff contingent to the convention.
Another labor group, Workers Stand for America, will have members out in the streets of Charlotte encouraging people to sign a pro-labor bill of rights. The group which has the backing of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the AFL-CIO and other labor groups held a rally in Philadelphia in August that some dubbed a shadow convention amid labor groups grumblings about Charlotte.

Mother Jones (18371930)
Typically clad in a black dress, her face framed by a lace collar and black hat, the barely five-foot tall Mother Jones was a fearless fighter for workers rightsonce labeled "the most dangerous woman in America" by a U.S. district attorney. Mary Harris "Mother" Jones rose to prominence as a fiery orator and fearless organizer for the Mine Workers during the first two decades of the 20th century. Her voice had great carrying power. Her energy and passion inspired men half her age into action and compelled their wives and daughters to join in the struggle. If that didnt work, she would embarrass men to action. "I have been in jail more than once and I expect to go again. If you are too cowardly to fight, I will fight," she told them.
Mother Jones' organizing methods were unique for her time. She welcomed African American workers and involved women and children in strikes. She organized miners wives into teams armed with mops and brooms to guard the mines against scabs. She staged parades with children carrying signs that read, "We Want to Go to School and Not to the Mines."
One of the most dangerous men in the world, and a frequent Obama visitor !
To quote Vice President Biden; ‘This is a big ....ing deal’.
