Cowardice in Washington (Akin)
Daily Caller ^ | 09-02-2012 | Rick Tyler

Any time a political consultant writes an op-ed, first find out who is signing his paycheck so you can have a better-informed opinion of his opinion.

Last week Curt Anderson called in these pages for Todd Akin to get out of the Missouri Senate race for comments Akin made in a television interview last month. If you go to the website of Anderson’s company, OnMessage, you can see that his clients include the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), whose chairmen have called on Akin to get out of the race and are increasingly angry he has decided to press on.

So Anderson is hardly a disinterested observer. Nor is he saying anything new. He’s simply expressing a new version of the same old Beltway cowardice.

Anderson makes three arguments for Akin to get out of the race. The first two are that Akin’s comments were based on debunked medical theories and that they were insensitive and hurtful.

Akin doesn’t disagree, which is why he immediately apologized for his remarks and asked Missouri voters to forgive him for his thoughtless comments.

Everyone makes verbal mistakes, Karl Rove being the most recent public figure learning that lesson.

The last argument Anderson makes is that “by staying in the race, [Akin]’s ensuring the re-election of a pro-choice Democrat, Senator Claire McCaskill.” Anderson says that makes the pro-life Akin a “hypocrite” because an Akin loss would re-elect McCaskill, who is pro-choice.

But how does Anderson know the outcome of an election that hasn’t taken place? The answer, of course, is that he doesn’t. He only thinks he knows.

Remember, it was the NRSC that begged and pleaded with Marco Rubio to get out of the Florida Senate race in 2010 and let Charlie Crist be the Republican nominee. They almost succeeded.

The NRSC and the establishment crew just knew — apparently like they know now — that if Marco Rubio were the Republican nominee, he would lose.

We all know how that turned out. Pro-life Marco Rubio is now a U.S. senator from Florida and just last week delivered a stirring and powerful address to the Republican National Convention.

And what happened to Charlie Crist, the man the Washington party bosses were so convinced was the perfect nominee? Well, Crist is addressing the Democratic National Convention this week in Charlotte to support President Obama’s re-election. Hey, Curt, in case you need reminding, that would be the pro-abortion Democratic National Convention gathering in Charlotte and that would be the pro-abortion President Obama that the NRSC’s one-time preferred GOP candidate is now actively supporting. [...]

I hope Akins wins.

I never heard the full details of exactly what the man said, but by now that is no longer important, because the news cycle machine has moved on and people's impressions are all that is important now.

So this guy said something that makes him sound like any Kennedy in the last 20 years, or Joe Biden. If it is a one-time thing and he has already apologized, it's time to move on. It's not Chappaquidick.

The Democrat Party has incorporated into its platform a plank that enthusiastically endorses the wholesale killing of innocent human life. The President of the United States not only holds that position but is comfortable with grisly and barbaric partial birth abortions. A culture that openly embraces such decadence can never prosper.

My comment remains the same.
TODD AKIN IS THE CANDIDATE elected by the voters of my state.
Unless and until he withdraws from the ballot I TOTALLY SUPPORT him. The goal is to send Claire packing.
Withholding funds from the RNC, MO republican party, and asking for write in votes will not defeat Claire. THAT IS THE MAIN GOAL folks.
Quit eating our own and make the best of what we have on the ticket.
This coming from, a Candidate for a MO house seat unabashedly and proudly supporting Todd. Up yours RNC, GO TODD!!!
Do all the write ins you want it will only help Claire. Withhold more funds, she can divert her funds to other races. LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE. I may not be as smart nor established as you are BUT !!!!!

I do not agree with Akin’s philosophy on the matter, and what he said obviously left him open to political attack.

That being said, I admire his fighting spirit, I like that he stands up for what he believes in. America needs conservatives who will not back down. She does not need cowards that run for cover.

I support Todd Akin.

NRSC backed Arlen Specter over Toomey in Pa. also. Their judgement is questionable.

First, he totally discounts the fact that voters take into account a lot of information about candidates before they cast their votes. For example, a majority of Missouri voters may decide that Akin’s apology is sincere and that they accept it. Further, these voters may decide that they appreciate a sincere candidate who’s willing to come to them and admit mistakes, and that they would rather vote for such a candidate than vote for a sitting senator whose values they do not share and who has made numerous harmful policy mistakes for which she has not apologized.

Todd Akin made a six-second mistake for which he immediately apologized. Missouri voters are likely to vote for him over Claire McCaskill, who for six years has been making mistakes for which she has not apologized. In fact, she refuses to accept the settled science that a baby in the womb is a human being. But I digress.

Second, Anderson doesn’t factor in the much larger damage that the Republican Party would inflict on itself by abandoning a good and honorable man because of a mistake for which he immediately apologized. Voters can smell establishment cowardice, especially socially conservative voters. Such cowardice is toxic. It’s discouraging. And it has the potential to depress Republican turnout all across the country this November unless it is soon corrected.

Rick Tyler recently joined Republican candidate Todd Akin’s U.S. Senate campaign in Missouri as a senior adviser.

The rest of the article is in agreement with what you just posted.

I just noticed the author is a senior advisor to Tod Akin’s.

There are plenty of hypocrites. Find a mirror and a picture of Rove. He may win first place. I agree Akin won the primary. He should be supported until otherwise. Can we stop calling the man retarded, ego- driven, pure evil, the devil, a fool, the traitor and an all around bad guy. His record is strong. I thought conservatives wanted someone with fortitude and guts to stand up to the rino country clubbers and the moderate agenda. If this has changed, I never got the memo. I think he should stay and fight on. What the man has been through shows that he will not turn on his convictions. He may not be perfect (though, who is), but his voting record is solid. People there have to think this through. A pro life person or the Obama lady. It's simple.

Akin only apologized for accidentally using the wrong words. This might excuse his misuse of the word "legitimate", but there is no logical way his apology can cover his bad science.

The most inexcusable thing he said was:

"It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare,"

What rational and logical-minded conservative would accept this as support for a valid argument?

Some scientists in England said that we should stop driving SUV's because it's going to cause the seas to raise several feet next year.

Some doctors with Planned Parenthood claim that abortion has no negative physical or psychological effects on women who have them.

The journalists at the NYT have no reason to doubt that Obama wrote "Dreams from my Father" without any help.

Akin is a lame-o. Because he is a lame-o with a big ego he will fight on. I hope he does lose.

Better to have an out-in-the-open lame-o Democrat than a self-righteous lame-o Republican representing the great state of Missouri.

And those who believe that Missourians voted for Akin are only half-right. You should be able to say that Akin was chosen by Missouri Republicans, but you can't. Because we'll never know how many votes he got from Missouri Democrats because they knew him for the lame-o that he is, and the only one lame enough to lose to McCaskill.

Missouri is a ‘swing’ state. There are about as many Frank Luntz independents as there are Republicans/conservatives and Liberal/democrats.

Whomever can woo the independents will win, and Claire got the majority of their votes in 2006. But this year she has on a different costume, she pretends like she stood against Obama and she is one of those so called moderate independents. Claire's new costume tells what the mindset is of those Frank Luntz independents... they are not all that crazy about Obama’s policies.

“What rational and logical-minded conservative would accept this as support for a valid argument?”

Really, why would anyone listen to a Doctor about a woman’s hormonal reaction to stress? Why would anyone think that it possible that ovulation would be naturally disrupted under these horrible conditions? /s.

How much have you researched the statistics for the birthrate due to rape. Most mother’s keep their babies, God Bless them and Akin.

my favorite analogy,

Obama is to Romney as McKill is to Akin. Voting for a liberal because we abhor the current administration is the same as voting for a conservative because McKill has got to be let go.

The NRSC and the establishment crew just knew — apparently like they know now — that if Marco Rubio were the Republican nominee, he would lose.

Different story. Akin was already the nominee and had the NRSC's support when he shot his mouth off.

I'm sick to death of the bull. The GOPe isn't trying to sink a pro-life candidate, they're trying to save a slate of candidates across the country from being tainted by the egotistical Mr. Akin.

It's all on him. He can find funding elsewhere if he's hellbent on still being the GOP candidate on the Nov ballot.

It doesn't make any sense to keep him in the race and go down with his ship when there are other well qualified pro-life conservatives, "thousands" Akin said, to take his place. It's an ego trip and insane.

Let's pray the GOP doesn't fall short on a Senate majority by one seat, the Ohio seat.

Any one for whom abortion is not a secular sacrament.

You might as well be trying to sell "Ryan disqualified by marathon comment." The comments simply do not merit the controversy their detractors desperately wish they could create.

Better to have an out-in-the-open lame-o Democrat than a self-righteous lame-o Republican representing the great state of Missouri.

And that attitude explains why there are few Republicans in office in California and why California is in the state of bankruptcy that it is in.

Wow -- and to think that we all believed them when they said that were trying to win the Senate seat in Missouri for the GOP.

Now we find out that they want to lose it so they can win elsewhere.

That's sure a winning strategy.

Fact is, Akin ain't leaving. We can either concede the seat to a vulnerable, unpopular, laughingstock Democrat incumbent, or we can win the seat with the guy who was nominated, who has a 100% conservative rating and 100% from the NRA and GOA.

Plus, we now know that Akin is not the kind of guy to roll over on command like Boner, McConnell, etc.
