U.S. motorists hit the road in large numbers this Labor Day weekend, undeterred by gas prices that are the highest ever heading into the holiday in part due to Hurricane Isaac, which forced the closure of oil refineries on the Gulf Coast.
The average price of regular gas nationally was $3.83 per gallon on Friday, 21 cents higher than a year ago, according to AAA. And the price on Monday will likely easily beat the Labor Day record of $3.68 set in 2008, the non-profit automobile association said.
The weekend is one of the busiest on American roads.
In Overland Park, Kansas, Shelly Faught and a group of relatives packed up several vehicles for a drive to a lake home in Arkansas despite having to pay $3.79 per gallon at the pump.
"We needed the escape," Faught said as she gassed up a pickup truck hooked to a pop-up camper. "We were a little nervous about the gas prices rising but we had this planned."

“Obama should have approved Keystone Pipeline.”
Yes. And he should do exactly what he told Clint to tell Romney, and what he told Clint to do to himself. He should also sign one last Executive Order requiring everyone in the Exec Branch, especially the Czars, to do the same before they shoot themselves.
This article blaming the gas prices on Isaac is BS. Gas prices were on their way up a month before Isaac became a tropical breeze.
It’s always a fire or a stoprm or someother reason that drives up the price, it is never the instability in the world because we have no leadership, or because Obama has fought tooth and nail against fossil powered energy.
Exactly!
It is certainly Obama’s fault. He has had 3.5 years to “incentiveize” domestic oil production and other energy development and has failed to do so.
However, Democrats are terminally stupid and irresponsible. They will continue to blame Bush even after Obama’s second term if we are so unlucky to be tormented by such and our country is still recognizable after such self-inflicted misery.
Sometimes, I think that Obama should be given a 2nd term just to prove once and for all that the collectivist ideas Obama champions do not work. Then, I remember my previous observation that dems are terminally stupid and the lesson would be lost on them.
I commented on the Reuters article but the comment isn’t posting ,, looks like they know how people will react to this whitewash/propaganda.
Oh never mind, I already know: Must NOT "anger" the "Moderates" by attacking the Messiah!
Sheesh!
Feckless, girly-guy, wusses, all!
We didn’t swallow it. We cancelled our trip.
I had to go out on Saturday to town. The road was virtually empty and in town itself I saw perhaps ten vehicles on the road itself.
Around here it really looks like the people are pulling back and getting ready for hard times. The downside of course is that the local businesses are probably going to to fail too as they need the customers who are re-trenching and not spending money unless they have to.
That’s nothing. The price at marina pumps are double that and there’s so many watercraft out this weekend you can walk across the lake.
Just Obama and his oil buddies screwing the American public. (snicker)
The core point in your post touches on why we are so screwed. The only way “out” is severe austerity, but austerity will be an economic death spiral.
FWIW, The guitar player in my band grows everything he eats on his own property. He even slaughters his own livestock, including making bacon.
I’m only doing chicken, garden and eggs so far.
But with his livestyle, his family has little need to ever go anywhere. Oh, and they home school.
