U.S. suspends Afghan security training (15 US Deaths at hands of Infiltrators in past month alone)

KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- The training of Afghan Local Police recruits by U.S. special operations troops has been halted because of 45 NATO deaths this year, military officials said.

The training break was called to allow for more extensive background checks on Afghan police and military recruits, past and present, NATO spokesman Col. Thomas Collins told CNN.

Insurgents have increasingly been infiltrating the ranks of recruits and gunning down their trainers, the report said. In the past month alone, 15 U.S. soldiers were killed by Afghan recruits, The New York Times said.

Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Seddiqi said the government agreed with the NATO decision and would work with the coalition to help identify insurgents.

Collins said a system was being set up for Afghan police and soldiers to anonymously report suspicions about other recruits. He said all past trainees will be investigated again more thoroughly, as will future recruits.

He said Afghanistan had agreed to ban the sale of police and military uniforms that allow insurgents access to legitimate forces.

An interesting lesson in asymmetric warfare. A group of illiterate fanatics with AK’s can successfully make a superpower change its policy.

Academic curiosity aside, our boys deserve better, OBL is dead, send them home. Let Afghan boys die for Afghanistan.

Time to leave I agree. The Marshall plan doesn’t work here. If our intelligence provides evidence of a Taliban/Al Qaeda plot going on against the US, use air power to obliterate the threat.

I agree with both of you for the simple reason of morality.

If we are not trying to win the war, then it is immoral to have people continue to die in Afghan.

Once the nation says, “we’re not pursing unconditional victory and our interests here are finished”, then it’s time to get out.

I sort of feel thee same way Bismarck felt about the Balkans. He said “the whole of the Balkans was not worth the life of a single Pomeranian Grenadier.”

I think that all of the whole Islamic world is not worth the death of a single Ameican Ranger.

Select the areas where the terrorists are worst and blast them with nuclear weapons of sufficicent size or number to do the job. Before doing so tell them they can escape by moving into an island where Islan would be banned at threat of death. And then do it.

Here’s a clue: if the Afghan has “Mohammed” or “Ahmed” in his name, write him off.

I wonder if the 15 in a month total includes the 2 “accidental” killings a week or so ago.

Obama is not a superpower.

As bad (and screwed up) as things were in Vietnam, I don't remember hearing/reading about ARVN troops turning on Americans such as we have witnessed in Afghanistan.

Time to bring them all home; not worth one more life of our Military Warriors on this lost cause.

Feel bad for the women and others who want to live in peace, but there is nothing we can ever do to undo, a thousand years of Islamic Jihadist/Warlord inculcation, ignorance, illiteracy and barbarian lifestyle.

I have a question, I did see a notice about some causalities posted on Facebook. One democrat (at one time she admitted she admired and still does admire communism) said and that not once during the convention did anyone mention our countries recent loses over there, thus the republicans don’t care..

My question, did the candidates or any of the speakers mention our service people and their sacrifices during a speech at the convention. If someone did who mentioned it? and when? If not the for once a democrat is right.

Not until enough of the adult male Pashtun/Pathan population is dead, that the remainder will never again be a threat to take the country over, as they did 20 years ago.

Whatever government we leave behind has got to be committed to keeping the Pathans bottled up in their mountains and out of the cities, so that Al-Q'aeda will not be able to find a lodgement in Afghanistan like the one they got before by playing on the religious hatreds of the Pathans.

Afghanistan is the right war, according to Baraky.

He only said that rhetorically, along the way to deprecating Bush's efforts in Iraq. We know now how sincere he was. Not.

Still, Afghanistan is what started the whole shooting match, and we've got to finish cleaning out the chicken house. Whatever it takes -- clean it out. No more 9/11's, too many nasty people are watching. We have to inculcate the lesson on people who haven't yet even turned a gear, that killing Americans is the last thing you ever want to do.

The Marshall Plan worked because we totally decimated the enemy. Ask my mother. She was in Berlin during the defeat. WE NEVER DECIMATED THE ENEMY, THEREFORE THEY NEVER FELT DEFEATED. They just endured. Either get out or go Patton on them.
