Conservative scholar Diniseh D'Souza's film has shocked industry prognosticators by earning an estimated $20 million to date, more than five times what the second-highest documentary this year, "Bully," earned.
While pundits and critics are divided over whether "2016: Obama's America" is a sobering documentary examining "the most mysterious U.S. president in modern history" or an 87-minute attack ad, there's no debating that the film is a box office phenomenon.
Taking a page from his own book "The Roots of Obama's Rage," conservative scholar Diniseh D'Souza's film has shocked industry prognosticators by earning an estimated $20 million to date, more than five times what the second-highest documentary this year, "Bully," earned. With virtually no promotional budget, the film has expanded in a little over a month from one theater in Houston to 1747 screens this weekend.
"People see the success and they think we have the marketing budget of 'Dark Knight Rises,' we probably don't even have the catering budget of the 'Dark Knight,'" co-director John Sullivan, who helped craft the promotional plan, told the News.
So they had to rely on the choir preaching to an even bigger choir. Sullivan says ahead of the film's mid-July opening at the Edward Houston Marq'E Stadium 23 & IMAX, local right-wing radio host Michael Berry championed the film with an all-out publicity blitz on his show.
Roughly 200 movie-goers were turned away from the sold out shows that weekend, a theater manager told the Hollywood Reporter.
From there, the film opened in three additional Houston-area theaters, then a handful of other cities in the reddest of states. It helped that by the time it jumped onto 1,071 screens last weekend, it didn't have to go toe-to-toe with Batman or Iron Man.

Well of course liberals are shocked that this movie would become popular.
It’s a cliche that liberals said after elections of both Nixon and Reagan that “how did these guys get elected? I don’t know anyone who voted for Nixon/voted for Reagan”.
The liberals live in a bubble land, and this is their Achilles heel. They truly are clueless about how this movie is resonating with people. And are clueless about how anyone would go to a movie which digs into Obama’s life and background.
Most Freepers will already know most of what is in the movie. No surprise really.

My son saw the movie this afternoon still almost full after two weeks running.
How did Moore’s film do in comparison?
I just hate how they repeat the same line in the body of the story. What ever happened to editing.
Indeed. I thought the movie actually gave Obama too much credit for actually having a thorough ideology. I see Obama as simply an average kid, who was raised by an America-hating mother and grandparents. He smoked a lot of weed in high-school, probably didn't think about it things, and simply muddled through.
Somewhere he discovered that his name, skin and background were the ticket to gaming the system. He simply regurgitated the same old standard leftist cliches. His policy choices as President are exactly that - nothing new, same old leftist pablum, along with some devious political calculation.
It needn’t do so in order to prove its point. This shoestring screed by a relatively obscure intellectual is beating the pants off of Hollywood’s best efforts when viewed on a per-theatre basis.
Barack was a pampered pet, purposely brought up in idiotic ideologies. None of this “discovered” stuff. It was spoon fed to him.
It will out draw Fahrenheit 911.

Just saw it this afternoon in my very blue state. 75 people max, mostly white, all over 50. I don’t expect an impact at my local polls. Good movie though.
One can hope, but Fahrenheit 911 is the highest-grossing documentary of all time. (~snicker he said grossing)

THe target isn’t the true liberals, dust them off! It’s the middle of the road or the democrats that fit into the Govenor’s “Damn we’re Republicans!” frame. They just haven’t had anyone explain the difference and are followers.
