Villaraigosa seizes moment in spotlight
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 9/4/12 | Carla Marinucci, Chronicle Political Writer

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa stood confidently in the midst of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., last week, a Democratic "spy" who relished his role aggressively defending President Obama.

Villaraigosa mocked the GOP's outreach to Latino voters, likening it to a lousy cook who can only "burn the enchiladas."

Now it's Villaraigosa's turn in the kitchen. He chairs the Democratic National Convention that opens Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C., and he welcomes both the opportunity to burnish Obama's standing and the chance to discredit the Republican challengers.

"You can't say one, and do something else," he said of the GOP ticket - presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his vice presidential pick, Paul Ryan - and their positions on immigration reform and budget cuts.

Villaraigosa, 59, who just wrapped up a stint as head of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, has been preparing for months to head his party's national nominating convention.

It's a high-pressure spotlight for the mayor, whose political fortunes have clearly rebounded from earlier personal and political troubles. Those included a highly publicized extramartial affair and some local governing challenges that turned his re-election in 2009 into a hard-fought struggle.

But today, with 10 months left in the job, Villaraigosa is increasingly viewed as a likely Obama administration appointee, even as he is hounded by questions about whether he will run for governor - or possibly president.

I think it’s funny that the DemoncRATs are using mayors of cities as key speakers. They can’t find any “good” governors of their party to speak.

One loser after the next shoved down our throats and glorified by the media.
Seriously, can ANY liberal run on their record of job creation, lower taxes, and low crime?

The comparison between the DNC's outreach and GOP's outreach to Latino voters is the RNC has Latinos out enjoying the 5 Star restaurant meal being served. The DNC has Latinos in the kitchen serving!

Villaraigosa has to shoot his mouth off in this way but he can't counter his party of Donks with the Pubbies Latino Senator and Governors.

Governor O’Malley is speaking....He is not a “good” governor but he is speaking. I am unsure of any others because they keep trying to sell him. I am in Maryland so I hear it constantly.

And, apparently, he’s as ineloquent as Obama AND Joe Biden.

He could easily win the governorship of California, but he may not be liberal enough.

As for the presidency... we'll probably need to "welcome" another 30 million illegals and get them naturalized for that to happen.

“Larry Gerston believes that Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa may have written the first lines of his political obituary this week by acknowledging a long-running affair with a television newscaster who covered City Hall.”

In response, Mayor ViagraLaRaza said, “I just like to screw with the media.”

Hardly. Clinton's popularity went sky-high after the Lewinsky episode. In New America, philandering brings extra points for democrats.

“All I can say is that if I were him, I wouldn’t make any plans to run for the Democratic nomination [for governor] in 2010,” said Gerston, a political science professor at San Jose State.

In CALIFORNIA???? Oh, please! He's Mexican, he's a democrat, and he gets a little extra on the side. Failure would be nearly impossible.

This is the Latin Obama, he needs to be buried quickly before he gains momentum, and next thing you know, is in the White House.

He has a sub-par IQ to the point of just above moron. If it weren’t for his moronic followers, he’d be washing cars at the car wash.
