JUDGE OKS CONTENTIOUS PART OF ARIZONA IMMIGRATION LAW (POLICE ALLOWED TO ENFORCE IT)

PHOENIX (AP) -- A federal judge ruled Wednesday that Arizona authorities can enforce the most contentious section of the state's immigration law, which critics have dubbed the "show me your papers" provision.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton clears the way for police to carry out the 2010 law's requirement that officers, while enforcing other laws, question the immigration status of those they suspect are in the country illegally.

The requirement has been at the center of a two-year legal battle that culminated in a U.S. Supreme Court decision in June upholding the requirement.

Opponents then asked Bolton to block the requirement, arguing that it would lead to systematic racial profiling and unreasonably long detentions of Latinos if it's enforced.

Lawyers for Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer urged the judge to let the requirement go into effect, saying the law's opponents were merely speculating in their racial profiling claims, that police have received training to avoid discriminatory practices and that officers must have "reasonable suspicion" that a person is in the country illegally to trigger the requirement.

Of course there is no guarantee that ICE will come and pick them up when the police collar them.

Even federal judges realize you can’t overturn laws before they take effect on the supposition that they won’t be followed.

“the ‘show me your papers’ provision”

That’s about as clever as me calling the cop who pulled me over a Nazi for asking to see me license. Know what? One thing the US has in common withfl fascism (among many others since circa 1932) is that authorities occassionally demand to see ID. The horror!

Imagine, a judge actually agrees that police officers should enforce the law. You’d almost think they were ‘law enforcement’ officers once again. I’m sure this will corrected in short order. /s

You have to mentally darken the image but this is probably how it looked.

Bolton realized a couple of weeks ago she couldn't stay the provision any longer. It was substantially up held by the Supremes. Then the Mexican and Mexican-American and Mexican government groups came forward to demand it be stayed.

At that point, Bolton made a statement that she didn't have much, if any, room to continue a say.
Bolton's name is pretty much garbage here in Arizona among non-Hispanic people.

Many States Could Balance Budgets (if They’d Stop Paying for Illegal Aliens)

http://www.foxnews.com/projects/pdf/Cost_Study_2010_Budget_Gaps_vs_Costs.pdf

State Budget Gaps vs. State and Local Outlays for Illegal Immigration 2009 (Figures Shown in Millions)

State: California; Budget Gap: $19,639; Illegal Alien Cost: $21,756; Difference: -$2,117; As % of gap: 110.8%

State: New York; Budget Gap: $1,707; Illegal Alien Cost: $9,479; Difference: -$7,772; As % of gap: 555.3%

State: Arizona; Budget Gap: $2,432; Illegal Alien Cost: $2,569; Difference: -$136.80; As % of gap: 105.6%

State: Nevada; Budget Gap: $1,094; Illegal Alien Cost: $1,191; Difference: -$97; As % of gap: 108.9%

State: Michigan; Budget Gap: $313; Illegal Alien Cost: $929; Difference: -$616; As % of gap: 296.8%

Feds Sue Arizona…But, What About Rhode Island?

Anyway, if enforcing immigration law is a bad thing for local cops to do, as Holder claims, why pick on Arizona? If he’s really upset that the same laws he has taken an oath to enforce might actually get (gulp!) enforced, why isn’t he suing Providence instead of Phoenix? They’ve been doing local immigration enforcement for years now. As The Boston Globe-Democrat reported “From Woonsocket to Westerly, the troopers patrolling the nation’s smallest state are reporting all illegal immigrants they encounter, even on routine stops such as speeding, to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”

If I’m not mistaken, several months ago Zero/Holder instructed ICE to NOT respond when police report the collar of an illegal.
