Tuning In

September 6, 2012

I don’t know if this is true in every marriage, but for some reason I have a tendency to tune out everything around me and concentrate on my own thoughts. This is especially frustrating to my wife, Martie, when she is talking to me about something important. When she notices the distant look in my eyes, she often says, “Have you heard anything I’ve said?”

Listening is an important part of any relationship, especially in our relationship with Christ. If we belong to Him, we have the privilege of communing with Him through His Word and the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. We know we are paying attention to the true Shepherd when His voice leads us to righteousness, love, grace, and all that is consistent with His character and will. As Jesus made clear when He identified Himself as the “good Shepherd” in John 10, those who diligently listen to Him become devoted followers of Him (v.4) who are becoming transformed into His likeness.

Just as listening attentively to your spouse or a friend communicates value and worth, paying close attention to the voice of Jesus is one way to affirm His importance in your life. So, let’s cast aside the distractions of life, tune in to His voice, and pray for the grace to do what He says.

I would be prayerful through each busy moment;
I would be constantly in touch with God;
I would be tuned to hear His slightest whisper;
I would have faith to keep the path Christ trod. —Walter
Listening to Jesus is the first step to following Him.

Read: John 10:1-10

When he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. —John 10:4
Bible in a Year:
Ezekiel 8-11

Thanks very much, Kathy!

*HUGS*

And thanks very much for tonight's Remembering Our Troops thread!

Thanks also for honoring our Battle of Midway Heroes! In my view, the Battle of Midway was a crucial victory for the U.S. Three Japanese carriers were sent to the bottom almost simultaneously through the efforts of many of our Navy and Marine aviators. The costs were high - many of our squadrons were all but annihilated. They flew in planes that were outdated and were burdened with torpedoes that failed to work. Still they fought their way through to victory and our Nation is forever in their debt!

Good evening, Mac...*HUGS*...how is your leg coming along?

Are you able to get around any better? Hope you are giving it plenty of rest.

We finally got our payroll program back at 12:30p, after 3 of us went to another building where they had the program working and we could use laptops. After more than an hour of not being able to connect, and their whole IT dept trying to fix it, we came back because it finally starting working here. This has been quite a day.

My memory is not what it was - I thought it was four as well - then I went through the timeline recently and could only find three of them. I remember seeing a Brit production on WWII including Midway - narrated by Tim Pigott-Smith. His narrative was so low-energy I nearly fell asleep. I think it took him substantially longer to narrate the destruction of Japan's heavy metal than it took for our guys to dispatch them. I remember hearing the phrase "The Ninety Seconds of Midway" applied to this portion of the Battle.

I have had better, more coordinated days.

It is still blowing, but not nearly as bad. I went out on the deck and a big birch tree has gone down from the far bank of the creek and is resting on the schoolyard fence. School was cancelled today, so they haven't see it.

My Mom says the school property is 11' this side of the fence...some sort of right-a-way. The far bank that used to slope down to the water is now a straight drop. The bridge is going to have to go. Our 6 knees that don't work well are not going to be going CAREFULLY down to the bridge, walk across, and then UP the far side bank....and the handrail in down as well.

Anything the kids need to retrieve....they will have to (now legitimately) climb the fence. Then just to the left, another tree from the far bank in leaning in the school fence. And another huge chunk of bank is gone. *sigh*

I can do that.

Good evening, Sarge...((HUGS))...and Bride of...((HUGS))

Nice weather today? We had LOTS of winds, up to 100 mph on the hillside. And LOTS of power outages.

Good evening, Idaho...((HUGS))...poor Fredd. This too shall pass.

Any reports from home? Have they stopped the fire approaching your house?

Good evening, AZ, and thank you for the red, white, and blue tribute to our troops.

Hope your day went well and you got some rest over the long weekend.

Did you have a safe commute? Not too much traffic? *HUGS*
