Rep. Yvette Clarke: The Dutch owned slaves in Brooklyn as recently as 1898 [VIDEO]

A Democratic congresswoman from Brooklyn appears to believe that slavery existed in her district until 1898.

Against the advice of her party’s leadership, Rep. Yvette Clarke appeared on “The Colbert Report” on Tuesday for one of host Stephen Colbert’s occasional “Better Know a District” segments. After getting in a few digs at Brooklyn, Colbert asked Clarke, who is currently serving her third term in the House, what she would say to her district if she could go back to 1898 in a time machine.

“Set me free!” Clarke said.

“From?” Colbert asked.

“Slavery.”

Trying to hold back his laughter, Colbert said he didn’t realize there was slavery in Brooklyn in 1898. “I believe there was,” Clarke responded.

The stupidity of the Rats has no bounds. At least Bachmann put Lexington and Concord in the correct war.

The ditz needs to get over it. To quote the great Redd Foxx, “The only cotton you ever picked was out of an aspirin bottle”.

So Colbert, bastion of Democrat group-think, laughs at the idea this might be true, instead of being repulsed by the possibility as I a Conservative am.

I sure hope Rep. Yvette Clarke realizes how he dismissed her concerns on such a grave important issue as this.

I don’t know the first thing about Clarke, but I can assure her that she and I share the same view on this topic.

Some “energy” guy was talking.....I channel serfed and ran across it.....made me sick so I changed channel....before I did the guy said something about jobs that won’t be “outsourced”. Some old lady turned to the woman next to her and, you could read her lips, asked “What’s outsourced mean?” And they get to vote.

If I was speaking to anyone who’s a democrat I’d ask “How does it feel knowing your guy can only win if idiots are in the party with you? Are you a lot like those other people?”

It had been my thought that pockets of slavery probably did last beyond the Civil War. I thought that she might be addressing some issue that had slid in under the radar.

Reading the back end of the article, it’s clear I was off base.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I was wrong.

I agree, she is an idiot.

Make you wonder what the Dutch did that gripes her enough for her to lie about them like this.

Best guess — they were born with white skin.

Sad, but true. I’m sure this nitwit thinks she is the bastion of tolerance too.

When I saw the headline, I thought I would be reading about a historian or at least a social researcher uncovering evidence of a covert ring like there is among some Asian and Middle Eastern gangs.

Agitation against Southern slavery was stronger in Brooklyn than in New York, and under Republican leadership the city was fervent in the Union cause in the Civil War. A great victory arch at Grand Army Plaza was built after the war, and a smaller monument was built downtown to Abolitionist leader Henry Ward Beecher, pastor at Brooklyn’s Plymouth Church.
