The parent company of the Albertsons supermarket chain is closing 26 stores nationwide, including 18 in Southern California, as it tries to overcome sharp operating losses and stiff price competition from big-box rivals.
Supervalu Inc. said late Wednesday that the closings are part of a decision to eliminate about 60 stores nationwide, primarily in its Albertsons and Save-A-Lot chains. Albertsons will have 228 stores in California after the closures.
Among the Albertsons locations in Southern California scheduled to be closed by December are stores in Long Beach, Glendale, Northridge and Van Nuys. A store in Culver City closed last month.

just another bunch of greedy corporate bastards out there creating food deserts and depriving people of their constitutions rights to conveniently located frozen pizza and cigarettes /sarc
In my suburban OC town, Walmart just opened their first Neighborhood Market, near three other Albertson’s.
Other stores within three miles include Trader Joe’s, Vons, Stater Bros., Target, Smart & Final, Mother’s, plus some more.
Walmart’s Neighborhood format is a medium sized store, about like a 1950s grocery store, plus pharmacy, open 24 hours.
If Albertson’s is cutting, I expect one of theirs could come up.

Going into Albertsons around where we live is kinda like going into KMart. It just looks dirty inside compared to the other mega stores.
Their grocery and non-grocery prices are routinely 2 to 3 times higher than WalMart and other lower priced competitors (such as Winco). The reason? Unionized workforce.
Albertson’s makes Kroger prices look really good.
Best prices are at WinCo if you have one in your area.
More Hope and Change.
LOL...But when the employees are laid off by the train load people take notice. No?
Have they talked to 0bama, Inc. to work out a business merger to save their business as of yet?.....
Or are they nonunion?
I have five WinCo supermarkets within 30 minutes' driving time of my home. No wonder why I have a big stack of WinCo paper bags at my house.
Kalipornia will always be Kalipornia
pity
$5.50 a pound?? jeesh
You are so right, Albertson’s is pricier than the other grocery stores I go to. Unfortunately, they are the closest ones to my house, so if we need to make a quick trip to the grocery store, that’s where we go.
I do a lot of my shopping at Mother's, Trader Joe's and Sprouts.
All the ones I am thinking of are in SoCal.
Southern California: The land where if you're middle-aged, you could really be taking an unnecessary risk by going back and visiting the neighborhood you grew up in and the high school you graduated from 25+ years ago.
Publix took over two.
Tell me about it. I went K-7 in the Chino Unified School District from 1965-73. Wouldn’t go back to that town if they made me the king.
