DNC Rabbi's Closing Benediction: No Israel Mention
Breitbart ^ | 9/5/12 | Ben Shapiro

Posted on 09/06/2012 9:23:19 AM PDT by Nachum

Tonight, Rabbi David Wolpe gave the closing benediction. And he missed two key references: Jerusalem, and the State of Israel. He focused instead on the false leftist definition of tikkun olam, fixing the world. Tikkun olam is actually a kabbalistic concept that suggests that Jews have a responsibility to fulfill the commandments in order to rectify the cosmic cataclysm that occurred with creation. But leftists like to equate tikkun olam with the entire leftist program, no matter how many Jewish commandments that leftist program violates.

Here’s Wolpe's transcript:

Dear God, we are grateful that our nation is founded on the highest principles of freedom and resourcefulness and creativity and ever-renewed strength. And we understand that those worthy ideals stand alongside the commitment to compassion, to goodness, our sacred covenant to care for those who are bereaved and bereft, who are frightened, who are hungry, who are bewildered and lost, who seek shelter from the cold.

As your prophet taught us: “shiftu yatom, rivu almanah.” Defend the orphan and fight on behalf of the widow. We know that our lamp is lifted not only to illuminate our way but to serve as a beacon to others that here, this land, is a place where the dreams of a weary world flourish and endure.

It would seem this guy was connected to Crist as well.

Makes perfect sense that he has. Democrat Jews are going hyperbolic about now. Their hero is going down in flames. Crist, who now is going over full bore to the 'rat side, would be anxious to attach himself to anybody in the party.

Shapiro is absolutely spot on with this:

But leftists like to equate tikkun olam with the entire leftist program, no matter how many Jewish commandments that leftist program violates.

Just me, I've no problem with the benediction, it's not a prayer. Leaving Israel out, it's a multi-faith benediction, there's noting inappropriate about that. Besides, anyone who thinks the delegates he was addressing universally care about Israel need only review yesterday's vote.

Ours is a holy charge. A single moment, a touch, a glance, a word, can change a life. Our children look to us with aspirational eyes, with the hope that their world will be kinder, sweeter, smarter, than the one we have known.

Each of these changes touches us all, for you have taught us that we must count on each other, that our country is strong through community and that the children of Israel, on the way to that sanctified and cherished land, did not walk through the wilderness alone.

‘Rachmana,’ merciful God. May we be guided by your wisdom, and so become more understanding of the convictions of others. May our souls be enlarged by empathy and uplifted by leaders and thinkers and teachers who believe in strength of soul and wild, wonderful visions. So together, with right and left worshiping the same God, our nation – this strong, blessed nation, filled with spirit and called to noble cause – will become more passionate, more purposeful, more burnished and bright through the warmth of your embrace and the extraordinary power, dear God, of your love. Amen.

Personally, I think I preferred Cardinal Dolin's, but that's just me. But the Rabbi's was fine.

With firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, let us pray. Almighty God, Father of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jesus, we beg your continued blessings on this sanctuary of freedom, and on all of those who proudly call America home,” he began. “We ask your benediction upon those yet to be born, and on those who are about to see you at the end of this life. Bless those families whose ancestors arrived on these shores generations ago, as well as those families that have come recently, to build a better future while weaving their lives into the rich tapestry of America.

We lift up to your loving care those afflicted by the recent storms, drought, and fire. We ask for the grace to stand in solidarity with all those who suffer. May we strive to include your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free in the production and prosperity of a people so richly blessed.

O God of wisdom, justice, and might, we ask your guidance for those who govern us, and on those who would govern us: the president, and vice president, the Congress, the Supreme Court, and on all those who seek to serve the common good by seeking public office, especially Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan. Make them all worthy to serve you by serving our country. And help them remember that the only just government is the government that serves its citizens rather than itself.

Almighty God, who gives us the sacred and inalienable gift of life, we thank you as well for the singular gift of liberty. Renew in all of our people a respect for religious freedom in full, that first most cherished freedom. Make us truly free by tethering freedom to truth and ordering freedom to goodness. Help us live our freedom in faith, hope and love, prudently and with justice, courageously and in a spirit of moderation. Enkindle in our hearts a new sense of responsibility for freedom’s cause and make us ever grateful for all those who for more than two centuries have given their lives in freedom’s defense. We commend their noble souls to your eternal care as even now we beg your mighty hand upon our beloved men and women in uniform. May we know the truth of your creation, respecting the laws of nature and nature’s God and not seek to replace it with idols of our own making.

Give us the good sense not to cast aside the boundaries of righteous living you first inscribed on our hearts even before inscribing them on tablets of stone. May you mend our every flaw, confirming our soul in self control, our liberty in law. We pray for all those who seek honest labor as we thank you for the spirit of generosity to those in need [with] which you so richly blessed this nation. We beseech your blessing on all who depart this evening and on all those in every land who seek to conduct their lives in freedom. Most of all, Almighty God, we thank you for the great gift of our beloved country. For we are indeed one nation under God, and in God we trust. Dear God, bless America, you who live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

Haha. I read that one.

The only “mistake” would be if the country is saddled with 4 more years of Obama.

Not only was Wolpe the Lewinsky family’s rabbi, he also sharply condemned President Clinton at the time his sexual relationship with Lewinsky, then a 24-year-old White House intern, was dominating national headlines.

Second ping.

What Breitbart reports as

Each of these changes touches us all, for you have taught us that we must count on each other, that our country is strong through community and that the children of Israel, on the way to that sanctified and cherished land, did not walk through the wilderness alone.

was actually

Each of these changes touches all of us, for You have taught us that we must count on one another, that our country is strong through community, and that the children of Israel, on the way to that sanctified and cherished land, and ultimately to that golden and capital city of Jerusalem, that those children of Israel did not walk through the wilderness alone.

The video at JTA follows the second version of the Rabbi's benediction. Not Breitbart's which was apparently based on an early transcript, not the benediction as spoken to the largely empty audience at the convention. As I noted earlier, I was OK with the Breitbart version of the Benediction, which should be non-denominational, but Breitbart was wrong this time.

He certaily wouldn’t talk about compassion for those in the womb. (For those who don’t speak Hebrew, the words for compassion and womb share the same three letter root “rhm”)

I think most Democrats should read all of Isaiah, especially chapter 5.

Dems get slapped again: Dem Rabbi benediction mentions ‘golden capital of Jerusalem’

How’s this for a slap in the face? At the Democratic National Convention, Rabbi David Wolpe slips the ‘golden capital of Jerusalem’ into the benediction.

Let’s go to the videotape. Listen closely around the 2:25 mark (Hat Tip: Gary P).
