Barney Frank Calls Gay Republican Group “Uncle Toms”
Washington Examiner ^ | September 6, 2012 | Staff

Posted on 09/06/2012 6:27:55 PM PDT by lbryce

Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., told the Huffington Post today that the gay rights group the Log Cabin Republicans model themselves after “Uncle Tom,” the servile black slave character in the novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

The liberal, openly gay congressman told the website he was “appalled” by the group’s support of Republican Party:

Frank then laced into the Log Cabin Republicans, who spoke highly of the GOP last week in Tampa, with its executive director, R. Clarke Cooper, commenting that gay GOPers felt more welcome than any time in the past.

“Frankly I’ve been appalled to see the Log Cabin club, in the face of this worse and worse record on public policy by Republicans on our issues,” Frank said. “Cooper said, ‘Well at least they’re not saying bad things about us.’ That’s just extraordinary. Again, 30 years ago when we were emerging from the vice of prejudice, I understood that. But no, we shouldn’t be accepting a kind of second class citizenship, [and saying], ‘You can treat us badly as long you don’t yell at us.’”

“They’re accepted on [the GOP's] terms,” he continued. “They’re willing to be accepted with no rights — no right to marry, no right to serve in the military, no right to be protected against hate crimes, no right to be protected in employment. I’ll be honest: For 20 years now I’ve heard how the Log Cabins are going to make Republicans better, but they’ve only gotten worse. I now understand why they call themselves Log Cabin: their role model is Uncle Tom.” (emphasis added)

The Log Cabin Republicans fired back in a press release, noting that they instigated the case that resulted in the overturning of the military’s “Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell” policy, among other efforts at advancing gay rights.

“As far as Log Cabin Republicans are concerned, it’s a badge of honor to be attacked by a partisan hack like Barney Frank,” said Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director R. Clarke Cooper. “We understand that Barney has earned his protected place within the Democrat Party by being their attack dog on gay rights issues, demonizing Republicans and undermining efforts at bipartisanship that would actually improve LGBT Americans lives. We expect this kind of bile from Barney, especially when it plays into the Obama campaign’s efforts to divide, distract and deceive the American people.”

Cooper continues, “Frank calls us ‘Uncle Toms’ and pretends that Log Cabin hasn’t been on the front lines of the fight for equality. The truth is, by speaking conservative to conservative about gay rights, Log Cabin Republicans are doing some of the hardest work in the movement, work that liberals like Barney are unwilling to do and couldn’t do if they tried.

Sounds like Barbara Frank has been hitting the cocaine pretty hard.

Actually, given him parading around with a belt on his neck earlier in the week, I think it's probably the result of him getting his rocks off via near-asphyxiation sex (how David Carradine managed to get himself killed).

I agree with you.

I’m also kind of loving how big that Democratic tent is. They love gay people...who vote the right way. Are you gay but not a Democrat? Who told you that gay people were allowed to have their own opinions on things? Only straight people are allowed to think for themselves, duh.

Uncle Tom was a hero. Barney Frank isn’t fit to shine his shoes.

As Ronald Reagan himself pointed out when he opposed Proposition 6, gay people are not defined by their sexuality. There are many gay people who just want to live their lives and do not want anything to do with militant homosexual rights. I know and am friendly with several gay people who want nothing more than to live in peace. I have a good friend who is gay who is as conservative as they come — his main concern is the deficit and the economy and he can rail against government spending with the best of them.

You are buying into the Dem BS. Gay people are not defined by a political agenda any more than blacks have to support a political agenda or Hispanics need to support a political agenda. I welcome any gay person to the conservative movement who does not define themselves by their sexuality or support the gay agenda, and there are a number of them.

“Uncle Tom,” the servile black slave character in the novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

For whatever it's worth, I've actually read the book, and Uncle Tom was not in the least servile. He was a true Christian hero and martyr.

I understand that a whole bunch of "Tom plays" portrayed him differently throughout the 19th century, but that is most definitely not how he was portrayed in the novel.

Actually, Barney is trying to scare pro-free market conservative homosexuals back onto the Democratic plantation. (A lot of homosexuals are self-employed and apparently resent the “You didn’t build that” line from Obama.

There was a poll recently, according to the Washington Blade, where the share of homosexuals supporting Romney has risen into the 30 percent range. Obama got more than 75 percent of the gay vote in 2008, according to the article. Barney is worried that these voters — who are more concerned about the economy than gay issues — will help Romney win.

Indeed, if I recall correctly, the vast majority of homosexuals in the survey said that gay marriage was of little or no consequence in their vote. Imagine that. If I can find the story I’ll post a link.

You might want to tell them that because they seem to define themselves that way.

I can live without the homosexual influence of the gays in the RNC.

Uncle Tom, the book, is free on Amazon Kindle. Uncle Tom died rather than take a position as lead slave and beat other slaves. Typical that Democrats would slander such a character.

It is a must read if you haven’t read it.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin has been continuously in print since its publication.

The irony is that the slave master who beat Uncle Tom to death was definitely a Democrat.

Was Barney wearing his belt around his neck when he attacked the Log Cabin Republicans? If anyone wanted to know where the S&M party was being held at the DNC, all they had to do was follow Barney....
