Exxon Valdez laid to rest (From Infamy to Obscurity)
Nature magazine ^ | 13 August 2012 | Shanta Barley

"Last month, the (Indian) court ruled in favour of Priya Blue: there was no toxic waste on the ship. The Oriental Nicety (formerly the Exxon Valdez) is welcome to beach at Alang, the world's largest ship-breaking yard, where she will be dismantled for scrap. But as with so many things in the story of the Exxon Valdez, the end will be drawn out. It will take 500 workers four months to dismember her carcass." (enclosed words mine)

The name Exxon Valdez is even more infamous than Captain Hazelwood, its captain at the time of the spill.

But finally the ship is going on its last voyage to be broken up for scrap at Alang, a breakup yard with a lyrical name and a very unlyrical reality.

They renamed the Exxon Valdez “The Oriental Nicety”.

You just can’t make stuff like that up.

According to the article it had a few other names until that last one.

Its next name will be fence posts and rebar.

It played an important (and evil) role in the movie “Water World”.

One more jab at the ship and captain. I saw that in the movie and thought it a bit odd.

In that movie “Waterworld”, didn’t that ship that the bad guys were on, called “Exxon Valdez”?

LOL - they raped, murdered, and plundered but the worst thing about the bad guys in that move was they were smokers.

Also they never explained how they turned crude oil into fuel for SeaDoos.

“Also they never explained how they turned crude oil into fuel for SeaDoos.”

In the same way all things become available in a fantasy world, they just appear somehow like milk and meat does at the market. No bad smells or dirty hands involved.

liberals despise that ship, an accident coated seals with muck. Like they did it on purpose just to annoy a liberal. They still get into their 4x4s an drive, so you figure that one out

Yes. Things in life were inexplicable and so the playwright could use a godlike device in his plays. It just is!

It seems the whole thing was a collection of errors, a drunk captain, a poor design of ship, perhaps lack of proper equipment.

“They still get into their 4x4s an drive, so you figure that one out”

You're supposed to give up your 4x4, their limos are absolutely necessary.

I google Earthed Alang. You have to see that place. There had to be 100 ships there when the shot was taken.
