Catholic Church still the focus of Madonna's ire
The Star-Ledger ^ | 30 Aug 2012 | Tris McCall

Posted on 09/08/2012 6:36:33 PM PDT by WilliamIII

The lights went down, and we were in Troyes Cathedral, or perhaps Fordham University. A gigantic glowing crucifix, several stories high, hung over the stage. It was the centerpiece of a handsome Old World church built of light and shadow on the tall video screens at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Monks in heavy robes chanted as a huge smoking censer swung over the sold-out crowd. And suspended at midstage, Madonna knelt in a hovering confession booth, delivering an Act of Contrition of her own devising. Then the walls of the booth collapsed, and the star dropped to the floor -- where she promptly pulled a gun on the congregation. The opening set piece of the two-hour pop concert was simultaneously spectacular and imposing. It also could not have taken anybody by surprise. For more than two decades, Madonna has been using her lapsed Catholicism as an instrument of provocation. She likes to play both sides: She wants to remind her audience of her Catholic, working-class, Italian-American upbringing, and she wants to claim and re-purpose the church's iconography. But she also wants to be the heretic who puts a pickaxe through the stained-glass window, and she wants applause for that insolence. On the MDNA Tour, which began its American leg at Wells Fargo on Tuesday night, Madonna gets to smash the cathedral into splinters with her fist. She also gets to stand on a bed under a black crucifix in a makeshift motel room (the sets in this show are elaborate) and blow away a long procession of ninjas. Every time she fires her weapon, blood splatters across the screens behind her.

Well, she provides a good description of this latest piece of Madonna trash.

What I do want to know is why liberals or leftists can get away with waving guns, can fantasize in graphic form about blowing away the people they have decided they are their enemies, and collect money for doing shows drenched with politically motivated blood and violence...and somehow, that's okay and cool with the New York Times and just about any other "peace-loving lefty" out there.

If a conservative had done this, naming as his enemy, say, the corrupt public school system rather than the Catholic Church, the FBI would be all over him and he'd probably never see the light of day again.

That said, I liked this line: It drives her crazy when other artists -- artists she considers her intellectual inferiors -- make headlines for outrageous stunts.

So this used-up, shoulda retired 10 years ago, angry and disappointed mega-rich celebrity thinks she's an intellectual. How about that.

I'm reminded of a dinner conversation a few months ago between me, my husband, our daughters, and our oldest (nearly 11) daughter's friend. Somehow, the topic turned to music, and somehow Madonna's name came up. The friend innocently asked "Who's Madonna?" and our daughter replied, "I'm not sure... I think she's some old lady who used to be popular."

LOL... still makes me smile.

I have a hunch that I could survive “Madonna’s” ire and I’m *sure* that the Catholic Church can.

I heard that Madonna showed off her buttocks recently at a concert, no joke.

All that’s left would be if she turns around and goes for full frontal.

Shock and awe????

Whoever said “shut up and sing” was right. Just sing and perform, but spare us the shock value of nudity or shocking anti-religious displays.

Takes a lot more lipstick for that old pig to appear in public, but she’s still a pig. Makes you think of Miss Piggy.

If a conservative had done this ...

As you say - the reaction would be dreadful and they would be lucky to escape prosecution - you are totally correct.

If this sagging tart is against the Catholic Church, then the Church is doing something right.

There are always those who insist that religions pander to their pet bugaboos, but spiritul codes don’t exist for the convenience of the worldly.

The Catholic Church lives rent-free in Madonna’s head. If she didn’t care, she wouldn’t spend any time fighting against it. But she just can’t seem to let it go.

Long before there were such elaborate anti-Catholic stage shows, the Church made the effort to “condemn” morally offensive content in movies. Twice a month in our diocese’s newspaper, there was a list of condemned movies. The list had some power to affect profits, and movie-makers would make some efforts to avoid being on the list — cutting a scene here and a scene there to clean things up.

It took some balls to put out such a list, and take a stand against godless Hollywood and its massive press machine.

But, the balls were cut off — guess when? In the mid-60s! What a wonderful, swingin’ time that was, wasn’t it?

The group that did the condemning, the Legion of Decency, became the ineffectual-sounding “National Catholic Office for Motion Pictures” in 1965. “Oooh!” godless Hollywood mocked. “We’re thcared!”

And so for about a decade the National Catholic Office for Motion Pictures stumbled along until it was disbanded in 1978.

Of course, the condemnation effort wasn’t perfect, and some of its condemnation entries might seem silly now (For example, High Plains Drifter had rape scenes that could have been clipped, but weren’t). But at least the list provided some guiderails. Now there are no guiderails.

A neurotic slut with a religious name (Madonna), brings her anti-Catholic junk to town, and the Church stands idly by, afraid to appear “old fashioned.” So the slut goes on and on and on and on, for like 30 years now, mocking decency and the Church, showing young people that decency doesn’t matter and is uncool.

Bill Donahue (president of the Catholic League) you know what I’m saying. What do you think would happen if you guys said something about the slut?
