The Taliban is using fake Facebook profiles of cute girls in an attempt to befriend soldiers with the intent of gathering information about operations, the Sunday Telegraph reports.
Australian and coalition troops are being targeted by Taliban insurgents posing as attractive women on Facebook, according to the paper, and now troops are being warned about the potential danger.
A review by the Australian government found a false sense of security exists among personnel due to an excessive reliance on privacy settings.
According to the Telegraph, troops are being told that geo-tagging the process of websites that secretly logs the location of where a post is made or where a photo is uploaded is of special concern.

We need rules like they had in WWII regarding communications.
I as visiting my grandmother last week and we talked about granddad and WWII. She said she never really knew where he was till later because there were such strict rules.
The Taliban can be lured in, by pre-adolescent boys wearing makeup.
Reason 386 why Facebook is an evil, evil thing.
yeah and? I certainly remember the North Korean spy I met a long time ago. She was cute.

Tokyo Rose has been channeled into Fallujah Fiona.
Why in the hell do troops in theater have access to electronic communications outside the chain of command?
Take away ALL iphones, laptops, cellphones etc. Any coms are through mail or heavily monitored comms via the CIC or similar office.
Either it is a war or it isn’t, no half way between.
Hello handsome American soldier. Come marry me. My father has two goats and a bush for my dowry.
One catch though: They can't be prosecuted, that would be "homophobic."
Just FB or all social media sites?
A useful excuse when stationed on the Isle of Capri with vino, women, and pizza no doubt.
I’m in the navy and I often receive friend requests from very attractive young females. I don’t know them nor do I know any of their friends. I figured there’s various scams behind such requests and the Taliban (or other enemy forces) could be amongst them. Naturally, I don’t accept the requests.
Mata Hari of the Tweets ???
^5
They simply don't have the ability to do that. We are a modern military and banning such devices would affect mission readiness. I can tell you that 90% of the time my cell phone rings, if it is not my wife, it is someone from my command --and they aren't calling to talk about the weather. Most commands have FB pages and this is where they dispense news about the command. We need email to communicate with each other and internet access for logistics purposes.
The best the military can do is to issue strict guidelines about OPSEC and punish anyone who violates them.
Mata Hari of the Tweets ???
Sorry, but none of that is necessary. Mission security is totally absent in that environment.
If that is what the state of our military is today, we need to bring EVERY service man home without delay.
This kind of loosey goosey communications smacks of small town police environment where there isn’t a cohesive enemy bent on killing every one of our friendly forces.
Yep, just like guns.
Homeland Security is probably doing the same thing in America to draw out veterans that are openly against Obamas transition of America to socialism.
But of course America just doesn’t understand that its “good” for all. /sarc
Yeah, right. I can see the recruiting drive right now--"Join the military, deploy to the other side of the world, live in shitty conditions, and have no contact with your family for at least a year! Sign up today!"
Either it is a war or it isnt, no half way between.
It hasn't been a war since Tora Bora. It's a counterinsurgency operation, unless you were in 5/2 SBCT, then it was a counterguerilla operation.
So glad our military has devolved into the best equipped touchy, feely force on earth.
Before long we will be making the French Army looking like a crack elite fighting force.
It is no wonder these illiterate third worlders are kicking our ass everywhere we go and destroying our 5 million dollar tanks with 500 bucks worth of HE and a spool of wire.
Bring them home or get serious about the mission.
Wonder if any of our guys figure this out and play tricks on the Taliban?
“Hi Ashima! Don’t have long. We are setting up the secret mind control satellite antenna today. It will be a game changer. Gotta go. We can chat tomorrow.
There's nothing wrong with "the military," just the ones who are determining policy. Some of them are in "the military" as well.
It is no wonder these illiterate third worlders are kicking our ass everywhere we go
Because Soldiers have the ability to talk to their family members on computers?
Bring them home or get serious about the mission.
Ay, there's the rub.
You don't have a clue of what you're talking about. Take away our communication devices (while letting the Taliban keep theirs) and you'd seriously hobble our military. Should we go back to Motorola 2-way radios the size of backpacks and guys who ran hand-scribbled messages from trench to trench (while the Taliban cell phones in our every move)? Not going to happen.
We bleed on the battlefield because our ROE makes us fight with our hands tied behind our backs, not because soldiers have Facebook accounts.
Talking/ communicating with family members is a nice luxury, and has been done for decades through SECURE channels so as to not endanger troops in the field.
If someone can not stand to be out of contact with their friends and family for extended periods of time, they need to find another line of work. I hear the Postal service is hiring.
I hear the Navy is real open about the swabbies using their sat phones and GPS units on the carriers so their families always know exactly where they are......NOT! And 80% of the carrier forces aren’t even involved in the ME expedition, they are essentially on peacetime patrol.
We have secure 2 way comm units that are the size of flip phones and not dependent on commercial cell equipment, and we have the ability to block ALL cell signals at will in theater.
You are the one without a clue as to modern communication equipment.
The backpack moto-units are so Richard Nixon, but there really are some wonderful developments in the last 50 years as far as military grade equipment, but you will not find it at the local Apple store.
My Mom had no idea at all where my Father was stationed in the Pacific Theater during WWII until he came home three years later.
Army ping...
The Taliban can be lured in by a pre-adolescent goat in a burqa.
Yeah, I can’t imagine how we ever sailed around the world and killed people before the internet and cell phones..
I have no use for any of the sites because they are all very intrusive. But FB is by far the worst.
LOL! There ya go.
Facebook is only as public or intrusive as you choose. It’s extremely useful for a variety of things.
“Either it is a war or it isnt, no half way between.”
These days, it “isn’t”.
Doesn’t make any difference whether it’s the Pubbies or the ‘rats runnin’ the show...
You sound like someone who knows a little about WWII and has heard a few stories, probably on FR, about how the military does things overseas. Have you done a tour in Iraq and/or Afghanistan? Or are you just another keyboard commando trying to tell us that if only you were in charge, this war would’ve been won long ago?
Oh, and your assertion that Sailors have no outside contact from their ships is utterly ridiculous.
“We bleed on the battlefield because our ROE makes us fight with our hands tied behind our backs, not because soldiers have Facebook accounts.”
Amen!
