Obamacare shock: College insurance prices soar
The Examiner ^ | 8/29/2012 | Paul Bedard

The future frightening payoffs of college loans are taking a backseat to the immediate and soaring costs of health insurance students are getting slapped with as they return to school this fall, all thanks to Obamacare.

Because of a rule in the Affordable Care Act that lifts caps on policy payoffs, the cheap insurance policies typically healthy students previously got are skyrocketing, some over 1,000 percent. The reason: Without payoff caps, insurance firms are boosting prices to cover their potential losses.

One example: a late July email to incoming students from Guilford College of Greensboro, N.C. revealed a jump from $668 to $1,179, a 75 percent jump. The reason stated: "Our student health insurance policy premium has been substantially increased due to changes required by federal regulations issued on March 16, 2012 under the Affordable Care Act."

The issue is brewing here in Tampa where students are pressuring political leaders to address it. "We're trying to make the conservative national leaders in Tampa focus on this issue," said Ron Meyer, spokesman for Young America's Foundation. "It's time for conservative leaders to start talking about Obamacare's hurt on college campuses."

This is so sweet ... and comical, too.

Sandra Fluke sure needs a lot of contraceptives, eh?

Our company’s as well. Plainly stated in the premium increase notice that it’s because of the affordability act.

I’d be curious what posters are paying for insurance at work. We pay 30% of premiums. I’m thinking gov workers pay maybe 10%?

If you mean fedgov employees (prefer not to use the word "workers"), the following should give you an answer. Rates vary by location, plan type, coverage level, but employee contributions seem to be no less than 30% and as high as 60%. These are not union jobs, by the way.

Not to worry. Koolaid will heal all your ills.

"It's time for conservative leaders to start talking about Obamacare's hurt on college campuses."

How about it is time students & faculty start talking. We conservatives have been warning about Obamacare since before it was passed - that premiums would increase & services decrease, & most college students poo-pooed these warnings. Now, if they don't like what Obamacare has done, they need to speak up, or shut up & pay up as Obama expects them to do.

I’ve never understood this thing about college insurance costs. I went to college from age 18 to 22 and was covered by my parents’ insurance. I think it stopped after age 22.

We also have more people uninsured than in 2007.

Aren’t they insured under their parents now until 26?

Exactly. When the warnings came from Conservatives, we were all called “racist Tea partying nutjobs”. Let us see what the reaction will be when criticism starts coming from within the so called “halls of academia”.

This is all part of Obama and the Dem's EVIL plan. Obamacare raises private insurance premiums so high people can't afford it, thus being force to take gov't insurance. This basically will force private insurance companies to close their doors.

Exactly stated by republicans as what would happen under Obamacare.

Since Obama promised that his health care reform would make insurance less expensive, of course it actually made it more expensive. He lies about everything.

Over the weekend I stared this thread about Obama's lies, and now that it's Monday morning, here's a link for the people who may have missed it.

Here are 95 examples of Barack Obama’s lying, lawbreaking, corruption, and cronyism

From what I’ve heard, under the upcoming Obamacare plan, that will be the case, age 26. I don’t know what kind of qualifying parameters exist such as student status, but generally speaking, age 26 will be the cut.

You nailed it!The true purpose of Obama care is to eliminate private insurance and force a demand to single payer insurance.

The young get to pay for the elderly by raising their premiums. Don’t you love communism?

Liberals will just blame everything on “greedy” insurance companies and start a congressional investigation into price gouging and/or simply pass a law restricting insurance companies from raising prices (sigh)

this will not end well.

Many colleges REQUIRE you to buy their insurance, regardless of whether you are covered by your parents or elsewhere.
