In reality, it is West Germany that annexed East Germany! For example, many East German companies that were worth something were taken over by West German companies. Companies that were troubled (i.e., communist basket cases) were liquidated. The result was high unemployment in the East after reunification.
The reunified Germany, however, was REAL TROUBLE for Serbia and its neighbors, carving out a sphere of influence in Roman Catholic Slovenia and Croatia while the US (especially under clinton) supported a muslim-dominated Bosnia. That left Orthodox Christian Serbia the odd man out.
Now Serbia is suffering from Merkel’s blustering, and we Americans are still saddled with muslim-dominated states in the Balkans that add to our BIG muslim problem at home and abroad.

We may regret letting the German state be reborn. Might have been better to break it up further.
