Calif. Law Would Permit Midwives, Other Non-Physicians to Perform Abortions
The New American ^ | 10Sep 2012 | Dave Bohon

The California Senate passed a bill September 6 that would make it legal for non-physician medical professionals such as midwives to perform abortions under a statewide training program. The measure now awaits Democratic Governor Jerry Brown's signature. (Gov. Brown pictured to the left of the state seal, Sen. Christine Kehoe to the right.)

According to LifeSiteNews.com, the bill (S.B. 623), introduced by Democratic State Senator Christine Kehoe, “extends a program run by the University of California at San Francisco [UCSF], in which nurse practitioners, midwives, and doctors’ assistants are trained to perform abortions without any further training in medicine. Kehoe argues the bill is necessary because there aren’t enough doctors performing abortions in California.”

The Sacramento Bee reported that the bill extends a UCSF program, begun in 2007, that “evaluates the safety and effectiveness of allowing certain non-doctor medical providers to provide abortions.... The goal is to increase access to the procedure in parts of the state where doctors are scarce.” Kehoe noted that the program is “an existing study that's been extended several times, [and] this is an additional extension. Otherwise the study would cease at the end of this month and the practitioners participating in the city would no longer be able to perform this procedure.”

The Life Legal Defense Foundation (LLDF), a California-based pro-life group that has been pressuring the UCSF for its records on the controversial program, explained that the measure was hidden in an unrelated bill at the end of the state's legislative session after previous attempts to pass it had failed. “This bill was originally created to regulate boat paint,” Dana Cody, LLDF's executive director, said of the bill carrying the abortion measure. “Now it’s regulating and destroying human lives.”

More competition should drive the cost of an abortion down. OTOH, if there are complications, the woman will be lucky to survive the procedure.

They are called doctors for a reason.

How is this helping women?

So who is up front in the war on women when they start allowing amateurs go tooling around in a woman’s vagina with sucion instruments and coat hangers? Or their stainless steel shiny replica’s, that do the same job?

yup.

I was under the impression the midwives had no training in general surgery as well.

Maybe some health-field FReepers could correct me on that - but that is what it looked like from my vantage point.

Liberals live government regulation, except when it comes to abortion (and a few other things that most people would never do either).

Makes sense. How often is this “medical” procedure performed for “medical” reasons.

This would forever degrade the practice of midwifery.

Leave it to abortionists and their bloodied minions to debase everything they they would touch.

The scowl of true Evil.

Unfortunately, I'm reaching the point that I no longer care about women who desire to murder their own.

If they are butchered by serial killers (what else are we to refer to abortionists as) in the process of slaughtering their own babies, who should care but the Lord and it is up to Him to forgive them.

That these innocent babies are pulled apart, limb by limb, burned under their own skin by drugs, have scissors jammed in the base of their skulls, all without any painkillers given, seems to matter little to their own mothers and certainly not by those who expect financial gain for such torture, like Planned Parenthood or other "health providers" for women.

It might be a useful exercise to propose such deaths for those on death row. It would certainly smoke out those who are "against Capitol punishment but all for Choice up to the moment of natural birth!"

Even the media and every other person who swooned at the DNC Convention that put "women's health" and "birth control" on stage, front and center are ghouls, so why cry over Planned Parenthood and other "professional abortionists," lose their gravy train to "amateurs."

Probably hideous bronze idols, complete with arms extended over a fire pit, ready to receive the “offering.”

They’re doing this to save your tax dollars! PP is so thoughtful and considerate! Surely the cost of abortions will go way down when today’s receptionist becomes tomorrow’s “women’s ‘health care’ professional.” Maybe they should change their initials from PP to BB - Butchery Botchery.

Once again we have this particular State trying to normalize an atrocity. It will never be considered a safe or healthy process.

I do hope that the budget problems this State is having won’t turn it into a prolonged death knell although the argument could be made that we’re already there but lead to a rapid change of leadership in Sacramento.Yes I am an optimist but this has to end.

However, I believe there are some filthy scumbuckets who would gladly go into midwifery if they could get the opportunity to perform abortions at $500 to $1,000 a crime.

If you knew how hard and long that path is and how much the insurance to cover a midwife costs, I doubt you'd take it up for a lousy few thousand bucks.

I was under the impression the midwives had no training in general surgery as well.

Which is why so many of them perform in a hospital setting. I surely wouldn't want to own the liability for a delivery that went bad and needed a crash c-section without immediate access to a surgeon.
