The Kickapoo (Kansas) Pioneer of the 18th, says: "A battle took place last night at Easton, between a party of Abolitionists and some Pro-Slavery men -the former making the attack. One Pro-Slavery man was killed and several wounded. Several Abolitionists were also killed and some wounded. A company from Lawrence, headed by Capt. BROWN, commenced the fight with the Kickapoo Rangers

Locals appeared to have kicked ass. Things were ugly then- best brace for it again.
Here you go.
Might be of interest, 1856..
I wasn’t able to work the link. Bummer. I had ancestors in KS at that time.
Personally I’m pro-choice when it comes to slavery. The government shouldn’t be able to tell you what you can and can’t do with your property. Its not like they are human anyway. Those religious fanatics that make up the abolitionist movement are nuts. I’m more interested in jobs and the economy. Social issues like slavery are just a downer for the republican party.

I clicked it up after I posted.. here’s the pre-link.

No one I know wants to re-institute slavery; many I know are tired of this federal government, however.

John Brown of Harpers Ferry fame? Wouldn't doubt it. The time and place are right.
Meanwhile, it is an historical curiosity that the two men dispatched to free the hostages and apprehend John Brown at Harpers Ferry were Jeb Stuart and Robert E Lee.
Yeah- the table sure flipped- not sure when; pre-dates me.
But- the resistance resonates.
My people scraped what they could out of the dirt, in central Missouri in the Depression.
He was a guerilla; such as was common across the border here.
He was a stern old man, with several sons in ideological lockstep.
He didn’t set out to be a guerilla/terrorist; but he crossed the line and there was no return after the killings at Osawatomie.
Neither side wanted to claim him (for long). There were many aspects to the conflict and his is a confusing one.
Not sure about that- I think it’s a different Brown.
John Brown was further south around Paola/Osawatomie and never held official rank IIRC.
As to the distinguished interlopers at Harper’s Ferry- I can only guess at Brown’s reputation as a killer requiring such a committee. He was off the scale- pro freedom leave-us -the f_ck alone to now you pissed me off and here I come, don’t care if I’m 65, so much the better.
Hardly ‘news’....
This may account for the Quantrill raid. Probably retaliation.
“News” Travels slow in some circles.
Might check “activism” and see if it rings any bells.
Just sayin’.
Plenty of grist for that mill...
Quantrill’s motivation/rationalization for the largest raid centered on the women killed and injured in the jail collapse.
Additionally few know of the Jayhawker raid on Osceola.
The point that Brown crossed the line was the Pottowatomie Creek raid where he needlessly killed squatters in retaliation for the border crossing illegal voters trying to keep the Lecompton Slaveholder Constitution.
