Mitt Romneys campaign is pinning its hopes that its big cash advantage will help the GOP nominee against President Obama, who is leading in the polls.
The goal has always been lets get into October and be within striking distance, a GOP strategist close to the Romney campaign told The Hill on Monday. Were going to have a financial advantage these last two months in the air wars, from the campaign as well as the third-party independent groups.
Romney had a $60 million cash-on-hand edge over Obama as of the end of July. While Obama edged Romney in August fundraising, bringing in $114 million to the GOP nominees $111.6 million, the presidents campaign has been spending at a faster clip in recent months, meaning Romneys cash edge likely remains significant.
On top of that, GOP-aligned outside groups like American Crossroads have a huge financial advantage over their Democratic counterparts, and will use that in the closing weeks of the campaign.
The GOP nominee faces a slight deficit in national polls following a post-convention bump for Obama, as well as the daunting prospect of needing to win approximately two-thirds of the swing states to pull off a victory. His campaign sought to put those facts in the best positive light on Monday.
Dont get too worked up about the latest polling, Romney pollster Neil Newhouse wrote in a memo distributed to the press and supporters. While some voters will feel a bit of a sugar-high from the conventions, the basic structure of the race has not changed significantly. The reality of the Obama economy will reassert itself as the ultimate downfall of the Obama presidency, and Mitt Romney will win this race.

All well and good but Romney better figure that Obama pumped out hundreds of billions of $$ to cronies with the f expectation that they will ‘donate’ substantial sums back to the campaign if it is in extremis. Then there is the overseas credit card donations from Gaza, etc. that will come streaming in.
Romney must think he has Texas in the bag because all I ever see on the stations here is Obama ads.
This is probably correct electoral tactics: most people aren’t paying attention to the election now (just because the pros, those of us here at FR and the blogs we like, and the opposition in the feverswamps of the online left are doesn’t mean people in general are).
An ad blitz in October and the debates should tilt this our way (well, bar a Reichstag fire type event, but that could backfire in the present environment).
OK, but where’s the tough talk NOW?
Mr. Obama is not a nice man.
Mr. Romney is being too nice.
I read somewhere but haven't been able to confirm that Romney's fundraising number only went through August 31 and he released his total's on September 3. Obama on the other hand waited until after the democrat convention and the first week of September when he reported his August numbers on September 10, essentially adding an extra week to his August total. In other words if Obama had only used the same time frame as Romney he would have had about $85 million to Romney's 111 Million.
They need to spend a lot of that money on a get out the vote ground game. After awhile, people tune out ads.
Sure, right ~ I've been predicting this since LAST SUMMER.
You'd get more campaign mileage by putting a few dozen agents out there playing LOTRO (Lord of the Rings Online).
Regardless of ads the media is following a plan:
2008 - don’t talk about who/ what he is
2012 - Don’t talk about his results or lack of real specifics on why it will
Be better in his second term
They have as much invested in preserving him as they did in creating him.
Let’s hope and pray that there are enough of us left to see the obvious and save the country our predecessors fought to create.
It’s been reported that the DNC convention went over $15 million in the red as well.
The deal is Romney is planning on a broadcast TV blitz of canned negative ads.
Where are the mass rallies? Where's the get out the vote effort?
Doesn't anybody over there in Romney-land care if they win?
Is it just me or does it look like Romney is playing “not to lose”?
This race should not even be close. He needs to be more aggressive. I just don’t see it. Plus way too many people are telling me they have no clue as to what Romney’s plans are.
Romney did not even have possession of his main funds until after the GOP convention.
I believe I heard a report that Romney is running ads on iTunes? Or some social media.
As for waiting until October to run ads.....they need to remember that a lot of places have early voting; here in Tennessee it starts Oct. 17. Not to mention those who do absentee voting.
Oh. In other words, then: the so-called Romneyian "Death Star" of a powerful, aggressive, ball-out-and-hellfire killer advertising blitzkrieg against The Won -- which, we were repeatedly informed by Team Mittens apologists, was only waiting for the end of the Republican convention to finally[!!!] get truly and tardily underway -- now won't actually be happening until NEXT MONTH, then.
An ad blitz with scrappy ads is useless.
They really need to step it up. Lousy campaign so far.
Remain in striking distance? How about just put Obama away for good?
Same with Maryland...Obama commercial even two seconds. Weird but maybe they are trying for the popular vote...that is the only explanation I can think of. Obviously he must have a ton of money we don’t know about to be playing so many commericals in deep blue states.
Some states will start the dreaded, manipulated early voting.
They have to start going after those early voters before it’s too late!
Doesn’t matter. Incombent Presidents don’t need as much money as the challenger. Obama has every news station and can get on tv whenever he wants. No need for as many commericals as the Republican challenger.
